Ding Junhui v Mark Allen: Prediction, Tips and Odds

There’s an intriguing last-eight Tour Championship tie when Ding Junhui goes up against Northern Irishman Mark Allen, who has already beaten John Higgins to reach this stage of the tournament.

Ding enjoyed a bye to the last-eight stage, courtesy of his number four seeding in Manchester, and the Chinese ace will be looking to star in his opening Manchester contest.

Ding Junhui v Mark Allen betting tips and predictions

Ding Junhui to win - 6/5

Allen found himself 4-1 down to Higgins in the first round of the Tour Championship, but the Antrim ace managed to fight back to run out a 10-7 winner. That was certainly a positive result for the Northern Irishman, who has already lifted the Snooker Shootout, Champion of Champions and Players Championship trophies this season.

The 38-year-old has won six major titles in the last two seasons, but it hasn’t been all celebration for him and he lost in the opening round of last month’s World Open, while he has also suffered first-round defeats in this terms European Masters, British Open and Northern Ireland Open.

There won’t be a first-round defeat at the Tour Championship, given Allen has already got the better of Higgins, but it’s not hard to question that form, especially when the Pistol is a 4/6 chance to beat Ding in round two.

Higgins has enjoyed a fantastic career, but the Scot has become increasingly erratic and the Wizard of Wishaw is struggling to maintain his best form. The four-time world champion fell away in the second-half of his first-round tie with Allen and the game was left for the Antrim ace to sweep up.

Ding looked in fantastic form when beating Liu Hongyu, Cao Yupeng, Shaun Murphy, Hossein Vafaei and Neil Robertson on his way to the final of last month’s World Open and it was only an inspired Judd Trump that stopped the Chinese sensation from lifting the Yushan trophy.

The 37-year-old also made the final of the UK Championship earlier in the campaign, and the effort in York as well a general return to somewhere near his best form, suggests that Ding has a better chance of beating Allen than the prices suggest.

Allen and Ding clashed at this stage of last season’s Tour Championship and the Chinese cueman ran out a convincing 10-5 winner. Perhaps, Wednesday’s contest at the Manchester Central will be a little more closely-fought, but the Jiangsu potter looks like a value play.

Ding Junhui over 1.5 centuries - 4/5

There are few players who can match the cueball control of an on-song Ding and he could rack up some big breaks in this quarter-final clash.

The break-building and power scoring was a feature of Ding’s run to the final of the World Open last month and the 37-year-old looked somewhere near his peak for much of that event.

The Jiangsu potter made a knock of 123 in a seven-frame game against Hongyu and that was followed by breaks of 100, 110 and 119 in six racks against Yupeng,

Ding hit a 130 break against Shaun Murphy at the last-16 stage and then went on to make runs of 73, 74, 102 and 135 in only five frames in a totally dominant quarter-final victory over Vafaei.

The Tour Championship is played over an extended best-of-19-frame format and that should allow the Chinese Sensation to find his touch in the balls and there are few cuemen as dangerous as a rhythmic Ding.

It hasn’t been a blast back to top form for the 37-year-old, but it has been a gradual improvement over the last 18 months and the former World Championship finalist now looks capable of challenging for major honours.

Clearly, Ding will be hoping for a consistent run of good results and break-building will be key if he is to lift the Tour Championship prize.

It has to be considered a major boost that the Jiangsu potter put a run of five excellent performances together at the World Open and the cueball control and positional play was spot on in that event.

There’s every chance that Ding will carry his China form to Manchester and backing him to have two or more centuries in the quarter-final showdown with Allen looks a wise wager.
