Joe O’Connor is one of the rising stars of snooker and has had plenty of success in the Championship League, reaching the final of the non-ranking version back in 2024, and he could go one better in this year’s ranking edition.
With the sport’s biggest names, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump and Mark Selby, not participating, it is wide open for any of the 128, including O'Connor, to lift the title.

Best Bet: Joe O’Connor to win the Championship League @ 16/1
The absence of some of snooker’s big guns from this tournament will give an opportunity for the up-and-comers in the sport and there aren’t many who fit that category more aptly than Joe O’Connor.
The 29-year-old was a finalist in the 2022 Scottish Open and has started to put together some very impressive performances in recent seasons, reaching the quarter-finals of the Welsh Open last term and the final of the World Open.
The former pool player is now ranked in the top 32 and is knocking on the door of his first ranking event win, which looks likely to come this season.
O’Connor also has a very solid record in this tournament and was runner-up in the non-ranking version last year, so clearly enjoys the format and looks set for a big run at this year’s event.
He has landed in a winnable group, featuring Zak Surety, youngster Liam Pullen and amateur Andrew Pagett, and from there he will fancy his chances against anyone in the latter stages of this tournament.
Side with O’Connor to record his breakthrough success by winning this year’s Championship League.
Joe Casey explains:
Joe O’Connor is up to his highest ever world ranking of 28 and has all the tools to go to the very top despite a relatively late start to playing snooker. He could have a big run in him at this year’s event.
Alternative Bet: Pang Junxu to win the Championship League @ 20/1
Pang Junxu is another player frimly in the category of one to watch in snooker this season, the 25-year-old was awarded WST Rookie of the Year back in 2021 and is a player on the up.
The Chinese cueman was runner-up in the 2023 WST Classic but put in his best season yet last year, reaching the semi-finals of the Northern Ireland Open, as well as the last eight of the World Open and the Shanghai Masters.
His only ranking final came in the Mattoli Arena, where this tournament will be held, and he has previously made the final stage of the non-ranking version of this competition.
World number 85 Oliver Lines, 19-year-old Jiang Jun and amateur Dean Young provide the competition in his group and he should be able to cruise through and make a deep run at this event.
Joe Casey adds:
Pang Junxu has been unfortunate to run into many of snooker’s big guns in tournaments, as seen when he was knocked out of the World Championship by Ronnie O’Sullivan in April, but with many of them absent, he could rule the roost in Leicester.
