Championship League Stage Three: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Stage Three of the Championship League starts on Wednesday with eight of snooker’s big names battling it out for the £33,000 first prize and a spot in the prestigious Champion of Champions tournament.

The original field of 128 have been whittled down to two groups of four, who now face off in six games per section that will determine who progresses to the final.

Leicester Arena hosts what should be an ultra-competitive final stage of this ranking event.

Championship League Stage Three betting tips and predictions

No repeat winners

The Championship League has existed since 2020 and has produced four different winners in the four editions.

In fact, there have been eight separate finalists, showing how unpredictable the short best-of-five format can be, with new contenders popping up all the time.

There are two former finalists looking to overcome the record books to become the first ever player to reach the final twice.

David Gilbert was the hero in the 2021 edition, beating Mark Allen 3-1 in the final. He has landed in winners’ group 2 of Stage Three.

In the first winners’ group is Mark Williams, who was runner-up last year after being whitewashed 3-0 by Shaun Murphy and is the fourth seed this time around.

Gilbert could be too strong

David Gilbert was one of the standouts in the last stage of this competition and he could be worth siding with to continue that form and go all the way.

The Farmer won all three of his games in the last stage, dropping just two frames in the process.

He won this competition in 2021, showing his liking for this format, that was his first ranking event win and he will be looking to add to that tally.

Gilbert has suffered disappointment throughout his career, reaching four ranking finals before winning this event three years ago.

However he has been in good form recently, reaching the semi-final of the World Championships recently, where he was beaten by eventual champion Kyren Wilson.

Take the world number 22 to lift the crown here.

Carter fancied in Group One

Ali Carter had one of the best years of his career in 2023, reaching three ranking finals and winning one of those.

The Captain beat Tom Ford 10-3 in the German Masters final before losing out in the Players Championship final to Shaun Murphy and falling at the last hurdle to Judd Trump in the Wuhan Open.

Carter also reached the final of The Masters where he was beaten by Ronnie O’Sullivan before beating Kyren Wilson in the Helsinki International Cup.

He transferred that form to this year’s Championship League where he has gone unbeaten in seven games, winning four of those.

The 44-year-old has two centuries in that time and looks a big danger to his rivals in Group One.

Mark Williams is the main danger but Carter was a 6-4 winner over the Welshman the last time the two met in The Masters’ last 16 in January.

Martin O’Donnell is also in the section but may lack the quality to get involved with these top level operators.

Scott Donaldson is a more likely challenge, he knocked out Fan Zhengyi and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in the last round, but again Carter was a 4-2 winner the last time the two met and could repeat the trick here.

Side with the Captain to continue his impressive form in the twilight of his career and finish top of Group 1 here, reaching another ranking final in recent years.
