Finn Russell is a professional rugby union player, who has made 65 senior appearances for the Scotland national team.

Where is Finn Russell from?

Finn Russell was born in Bridge of Allan, just north of the city of Stirling in Scotland. He is from a sporting family, with his father a passionate racket sports player who also served as Director of Domestic Rugby for the Scottish Rugby Union.

Russell's grandparents were both professional badminton players, and his uncle and great-grandfather also played cricket nationally for Scotland.

His younger brother Archie is also a rugby union player who has represented Cambridge University and Scotland Under 20s.

Russell started playing rugby for Wallace High School in Stirling, before pursuing an apprenticeship as a stonemason for three years prior to turning professional.

Russell currently plays club rugby for Racing 92 in France, having transferred from Glasgow Warriors in 2018.

Russell played for a number of amateur teams before turning professional with the Warriors, including Stirling County, Falkirk and Ayr.

Why did Finn Russell not play for Scotland?

Russell has had a tumultuous relationship with Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend.

The mercurial fly-half left the Scotland squad ahead of the 2020 Six Nations, criticising manager Townsend's coaching methods.

In 2022, he was dropped for his nation's final Six Nations match against Ireland as one of six players caught on an unauthorised night out in Edinburgh, and was subsequently left out of the squad for a summer tour of Argentina.
