Si Jiahui World Snooker Championship Odds: Chinese star 14/1 for Crucible crown after beating Mark Williams

Si Jiahui has been priced up at 14/1 to win the 2024 Word Snooker Championship after overcoming three-time winner Mark Williams in the first round.

(Odds will display when market is available)

The Chinese star, who reached the semi-finals on debut last year, maintained his fine Crucible form, seeing off three-time Crucible winner Williams in a tense and dramatic final frame decider.

Jiahui showed maturity and composure beyond his years to see off his spirited, and in-form, opponent, who opened the best-of-19 showdown on Monday with a sensational 142 full clearance.

However, Williams - who last won the World Snooker Championship in 2018 - wasn't quite able to reproduce that form thereonafter, notching just three additional breaks over 50.

His slender 5-4 first session advantage soon evaporated too, as Jiahui reeled off four successive frames in Tuesday's second session to put himself in full control of the match.

However, Williams was as stubborn, dogged and brave as ever, and showcased his imperious potting credentials with a couple of sublime long reds to get in the balls in frames 14 and 15 to move to back within one.

Jiahui made a mockery of his 250/1 pre-tournament hopes 12 months ago as he reached the semi-finals on debut, and once more looked every bit the player that stunned the likes of Shaun Murphy and Anthony McGill in 2023 with a decisive clearance in frame 16 to put himself on the brink of victory.

Once again though, Williams came back fighting, winning the next two frames to take the match to a decider.

The Welshman rattled the middle jaw when Jiahui presented him with an opportunity to get in first, and it proved costly, as the fearless, and seemingly nerveless, Chinese star pulled himself over the line with a gutsy, match-winning break of 77.

His reward... an enthralling last 16 encounter with fellow qualifier Jak Jones, after the Welsh potter breezed past the number 11 seed Zhang Anda at the weekend.

Maybe, just maybe, we are witnessing Asia's first ever World Snooker Champion.

Odds were correct at the time of writing and are subject to fluctuation.
