Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds: Tips, predictions & odds

A Yorkshire derby with huge implications at either end of the table as relegation-threatened Sheffield Wednesday seek to put a dent in Leeds’ promotion charge.

Leeds are hunting automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, with Wednesday desperately trying to clamber out of the relegation zone.

Sheff Wed v Leeds tips and predictions

Draw @ 3/1

Sheffield Wednesday have already drawn at Elland Road this season and taken a point off Leicester, so don’t be surprised if Danny Rohl’s improving Owls frustrate mighty Leeds at Hillsborough.

A week after Leeds failed to see off another struggling Yorkshire rival in a 1-1 draw at ten-man Huddersfield, Daniel Farke’s Whites won’t be expecting any gifts from a Wednesday side fighting for their lives.

And fighting well, having chalked up five wins in their last six league matches.

They were eight points from safety following a 4-0 drubbing at Huddersfield five weeks ago - now they are in the bottom three on goal difference alone.

Five clean sheets in their last eight is the bedrock of that revival and that new-found defensive fortitude is going to be tested by a Leeds side who are incessant attackers.

But as we get to the back end of a sapping season even the goals are drying up for Leeds and the prospects of a low-scoring affair is real. And the fewer the goals the greater likelihood of the draw, which looks a decent price at 3/1.

It may have taken Rohl a while to get his message across but it’s echoing around the dressing room loud and clear and the Owls aren’t a side feeling sorry for themselves but instead are brimming with confidence.

The 2-0 win over Birmingham sandwiched between that heavy loss at Huddersfield and predictable defeat at Leicester, hinted at possibilities. Since then they have won 2-0 at Millwall and 1-0 at Rotherham and beaten Bristol City 2-1 and Plymouth 1-0 in front of their own fans.

That’s promotion form, not quite at the level of Leeds, who have taken 31 points from a last possible 33 since the turn of the year.

But it’s been a tough week for them playing against Huddersfield and Stoke, both of whom ended up with ten men but each were able to frustrate Farke’s side. Friday night could well be another frustrating evening for the Whites’ chief.

Marvin Johnson Over 0.5 Shots on Target @ 12/5

Marvin Johnson has been a key figure in Wednesday’s recent revival and will be a key man against Leeds.

Farke’s visitors will pile up more chances on greater possession but Wednesday will have openings of their own and left wing-back Johnson is likely to be at the heart of many of them.

A pivotal part in stopping teams work Wednesday down the left, he is also hugely influential going forward with three goals to his name.

He averages 1.3 shots per game and in the last three matches - the wins over Bristol City, Rotherham and Plymouth - has fired off nine shots.

Only two members of the Leeds squad shoot more often than Johnson, who looks a decent bet at 12/5 to get one on target.

Over 3.5 Sheff Wed corners @ 4/5

The only defeat in Wednesday’s current winning streak came at Leicester, a 2-0 loss at arguably the best team in the division.

There was no shame in that setback, a match in which Wednesday had more shots and more corners than the Foxes.

They won seven corners at the King Power and despite being a fairly lame attacking unit for much of the season until Rohl’s recent turnaround, they are still averaging 5.3 corners per match.

Leeds, especially away, will offer up chances as they keep the game stretched. Away from Elland Road they concede an average 6.3 corners a game.

By any measure it seems far likelier than 4/5 that Wednesday clear the 3.5 corner barrier on Friday night.
