After two dramatic semi-finals, the 2026 World Snooker Championship final certainly lived up to all expectations and provided plenty of twists and turns throughout the two days as both players played their part in an historic final in Sheffield.
Wu Yize, who hadn't won a match at the Crucible before the tournament, showed no signs of nerves at the start of the biggest match of his life as he raced into a 3-0 lead before Murphy found his feet and ensured the match was level at 4-4 after Sunday afternoon's opening session.
It was an absorbing second session on Sunday evening and after hitting the front, Yize extended his advantage to three frames as he secured a 10-7 scoreline after the opening day.
However, you can never discount the Magician and Murphy conjured up some sensational snooker to claim each of the first five frames on Monday to dramatically take a 12-10 lead, moving within six frames of becoming world champion for the first time since 2005.
However, the 22-year-old Chinese star hit back in sensational fashion, reeling off three successive frames of his own to hold a narrow 13-12 lead heading into the closing session.
The final session started in very much the same vein as the rest of the match with the two players going blow for blow and sharing the four frames played before the mid-session interval.
A dramatic 30th frame could have proved crucial as Murphy produced a superb 65 clearance to level the match at 15-15 and turn a best-of-35 match into a best-of-five race to the finish.
But the Chinese star refused to buckle and he moved to within two frames of victory with a dominant display in frame 31.
Once again, Murphy got back on terms with a maximum of three frames to play as he made a sensational break of 131 to level the match at 16-16.
Facing a 43-point deficit and looking set to miss out on a second world title, Murphy showed his class to make a fantastic 75 clearance and fittingly take a remarkable final to a deciding frame.
Facing the biggest moment of his career inside the most iconic venue the sport has to offer, Wu incredibly showed no nerves as he made the most of his opportunity in the final frame to get over the line and claim a famous Crucible victory.
To land your first World Snooker Championship title is an incredible achievement, but to win it by coming out on top in deciding frames in both the semi-final and final makes Wu’s maiden success even more remarkable.
