Serie A Top Four Permutations: The race for UEFA Champions League football

The race for UEFA Champions League football in Serie A will reach its climax on Saturday evening.

While Inter clinched a 21st top-flight honour with a 2-0 win over Parma on 3rd May, there remains plenty of room for change in the top four.

Napoli have secured UEFA Champions League football for the 2026/27 campaign, while AC Milan, Roma, Como and Juventus will battle for the final two spots on the final day of the Serie A season.

We take a look at the permutations ahead of Saturday evening's round of fixtures

What do AC Milan need to qualify for the UEFA Champions League?

AC Milan need to beat Cagliari on the final day to mathematically finish third and therefore qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

A point would see them finish above Como, even if Cesc Fabregas' side beat Cremonese, due to the head-to-head record, but they would drop below Juventus in the standings if the Old Lady beat Torino and Milan fail to win.

If Roma better Milan's result, they too would overtake Massimiliano Allegri's side.

What do Roma need to qualify for the UEFA Champions League?

Similarly to Milan, Roma need to win against Verona to secure top four and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. If they clinch three points and Milan fail to win, Gian Piero Gasperini's side would finish third.

If Roma fail to win and one of Como or Juventus win, I Giallorossi would drop out of the top four and qualify for the Europa League in fifth or sixth place.

What do Como need to qualify for the UEFA Champions League?

If Como win against Cremonese and Roma lose or draw against Roma, Fabregas' team will break into the top four and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. To finish above Milan, they would need to beat Cremonese and hope that the 19-time Serie A champions lose at home against Cagliari.

If both Milan and Roma lose, a win for Como would see them jump to third in the standings, while a draw would see them qualify for the Europa League in fifth or sixth, depending on Juve's results.

What do Juventus need to qualify for the UEFA Champions League?

If Juventus beat Torino and Roma fail to win against Verona, Luciano Spalletti's side would leapfrog I Giallorossi in the standings. Similarly, victory for the Old Lady would see them overtake Milan IF they fail to beat Cagliari.

Como's head-to-head record against Juventus is superior, and so Juve would need to better their result to finish above Fabregas's team.

Ultimately, Juventus need two of Milan, Roma or Como to drop points to stand a chance of breaking into the top four. Even in this case, they are required to win away at 12th placed Torino to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Juventus can't drop lower than sixth in the standings, and so they have secured Europa League football even if they lose on Saturday.
