When a big fight falls through at short notice, the best you can hope for is that a suitable opponent can be found.

Serhii Bohachuk had originally been slated to face Israil Madrimov, but the Uzbek withdrew citing illness, despite having signed to face Victor Ortiz Jr, two months later.

The joys of boxing politics.

Now, the former WBC ‘Interim’ super-welterweight champion takes on Ishmael Davis, on 21st December, in Saudi Arabia.

Bohachuk will be hoping to secure another bout against one of the marquee names of the division, but will have to overcome the late stand-in to do so.

Davis showed ability as he suffered a narrow defeat against Josh Kelly, in September. A win will cement his place amongst the best in the weight class.

Who will prevail?

Let’s have a look at the tale of the tape…

Serhii Bohachuk - In Profile

Boxing is sport of fine margins.

In a Fight of the Year contender against Vergil Ortiz Jr back in August, Bohachuk found himself on the wrong end of a majority decision defeat.

It could have gone the way of the Ukrainian, and perhaps, it should have.

The Texan entered the bout with a perfect record: 21 wins, 21 knockouts.

Ortiz Jr was perceived by many observers as the next big star of the super-welterweight division, as such, few gave ‘El Falco’ much of a shot.

Bohachuk had not read the script. The American touched the canvas in the opening round, and the referee initially ruled it a slip until the decision was reversed after a replay.

The action was relentless, both men unleashed barrages of hard shots, round after round. Usually, when each connects in that manner, the fight ends.

Somehow, they were both able to absorb the best their rival had to offer.

The 29-year-old demonstrated that he is a threat with either hand after a left hook floored Ortiz Jr once more in the eighth round.

The Texan rallied, closing the fight strongly.

It was a war in which neither deserved to lose, but Bohachuk did.

The Ukrainian was rewarded with another big clash against Madrimov, but Ortiz Jr. appears to have bested him once again by securing a clash with the Uzbek.

Late replacement Davis has a style which should suit Bohachuk and the watching spectators. However, ‘El Falco’ cannot afford a slip-up if he hopes to face the winner of Ortiz Jr and Madrimov.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

Applies pressure

Stays in range too long

Chin

Moves back in straight lines

Power

Lack of head movement

Combination punching

Can get pushed back to the ropes

Ishmael Davis - In Profile

Ishmael Davis has a rare mentality for a modern fighter: he accepts any and all fights.

He rose from the Leeds small-hall scene as a result of this attitude.

He accepted 50/50 fights against, first Ewan McKenzie, then Troy Williamson.

In reality, neither turned out to be as close as they appeared to be on paper, as ‘The Black Panther’ demonstrated his class.

Former flyweight world champion Sunny Edwards previously described the 29-year-old as the best kept secret in British boxing and now the secret is out.

Davis took another gamble by challenging Josh Kelly in September.

The former Olympian looked classy early on, but the Leeds man refused to let up, applying pressure until the final bell.

It almost paid dividends as Kelly was in trouble late on.

Ultimately, ‘Pretty Boy’ prevailed by the finest of margins.

Davis’ endeavours have earned him another chance to prove he belongs at the highest level.

Unlike Kelly, Bohachuk is not elusive, Davis won’t have to go looking for him.

The question is: can the Englishman handle the pressure and power? Time will tell.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

Applies pressure

Stays in range too long

Timing

Lack of experience

Short, compact punches

Untested at this level

Jab

Lack of head movement
