The second tier of Scottish football has taken on various forms since the formal foundation of the Scottish Football League in 1893.
From 1893 and 1946 the second tier was known as the Scottish Football League Division Two.
Following the culmination of World War II, the second tier was known as the Scottish Football League Division B between 1946 and 1955.
The league then reverted to the Scottish Football League Division Two for two decades between 1955 and 1975, before the second tier became the Scottish Football League First Division between 1975 and 2013.
The second tier is currently referred to as the Scottish Championship following the installation of the Scottish Professional Football League in 2013.
