Scottish Champion Hurdle odds: L'eau Du Sud and Rubaud amongst contenders

Rubaud is 9/1 to defend his Scottish Champion Hurdle crown at Ayr on Saturday afternoon.

Paul Nicholls won the Scottish Champion Hurdle for the third time with Rubaud in last year's race, after previous victories with Fadalko (1999) and Sanctuaire (2011), and he now has the opportunity to equal Martin Pipe's record of four Scottish Champion Hurdle wins.

A victory for Rubaud in Scotland would see the six-year-old join Sea Pigeon and Birds Nest as the third two-time winner of the race.

The season couldn't have got off to a better start for Rubaud after winning on his reappearance at Kempton in October, before subsequently winning the Elite Hurdle at Wincanton a month later.

Only the brilliance of Constitution Hill got the better of him in the Christmas Hurdle, but Nicholls will be targeting a return to form after finishing fourth in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham and a disappointing outing at Wincanton last time out.

The betting favourite for this year's race, however, is L'Eau Du Sud, who is part-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson.

In-form trainer Dan Skelton hasn't enjoyed a victory with the horse in the six races since the acquisition from France in the Autumn of 2022, but his last two performances suggest that the elusive first win since arriving in the UK could be imminent.

L'Eau Du Sud returned to action in February after being pulled up in the Greatwood on his seasonal bow, and he finished second behind Iberico Lord at odds of 28/1 in a highly competitive Betfair Hurdle at Newbury.

A trip to the Cheltenham Festival followed in March as he was narrowly edged out by Absurde in the County Hurdle.

Both of those encouraging displays were on hevay ground and he should relish any rain in the build up to the race at Ayr.
