bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “It’s been an interesting few months for Scheffler both on and off the golf course but the most in-form player on the planet is now focusing solely on his golf and that has to be a worry for the rest of the field as well as us bookmakers.
“He was 8/1 after his third place finish at the US Open last year and his odds have understandably tumbled since then with punters keeping it simple by backing a worthy-looking favourite in Scheffler.”
The world number one became only the second player after Tiger Woods to win the Players Championship, Masters and Memorial in the same year.
Holding a four-shot lead heading into the final round, it was far from the procession that everybody anticipated as Scheffler carded 74 on Sunday.
Scheffler demonstrated plenty of resolve to fend off the charge of Collin Morikawa, who finished one shot behind.
A bogey on the 17th had given Morikawa a scent of victory but Scheffler held his nerve, holing a five-foot putt on the last to secure his 11th win on the PGA TOUR.
It was a perfect rehearsal for Scheffler, who now heads to the 124th U.S. Open championship at Pinehurst Resort vying for his third major title.
Incredibly, given the accomplishments Scheffler has achieved over the last two years, the 27-year-old has only tasted success at Augusta when it comes to major tournaments.
In the 2022 U.S. Open, he finished T2 at The Country Club behind Matt Fitzpatrick. A year later in Los Angeles he placed third, three shots adrift of the champion Wyndham Clark. Another near miss arose at the 2023 PGA Championship, with Scheffler's final round score of 67 moving him into contention but fell short of toppling Brooks Koepka.
Scheffler has 11 Top 10 finishes in his last 16 major appearances, which speaks volumes of his remarkable consistency.
The world number one has finished 3, T2 and T7 in his last three U.S. Open tournaments and another Top 10 finish at Pinehurst (Including Ties) is priced at 2/5.
