Scottie Scheffler blasts caddie Ted Scott after finding water at Memorial Tournament

Scottie Scheffler launched into a two-minute rant at caddie Ted Scott after finding water on the 16th hole at the Memorial Tournament on Thursday.

Plodding away at even par heading to the par-3 16th, Scott handed Scheffler a 7-iron, only for Scheffler to come up short of the green and find water, leading to a double bogey.

While Scheffler's seemingly laid-back approach to the game and life doesn't always win over fans who like to see players wear their heart on their sleeves, the world number one has always admitted to being fiercely competitive, with tensions boiling over on Thursday afternoon.

Scheffler and Scott have one of the best player-caddie relationships in golf, but that didn't save the looper from Scheffler's barbs. Upon finding the water, Scheffler said: "I never thought I was in the water. I don't know what to do."

The Memorial Tournament

With Scott walking to the drop zone and a bewildered Scheffler motionless on the tee box, Scheffler followed up: "I can't hear a word you're saying. I feel like that was a good shot, now I'm in the water, because [the wind] came in out of the right.

"Absolutely flushed a 7-iron and we get the wind wrong and I'm in the water. I don't think you understand how frustrating that is. That was a good shot, flushed it, liked the line.

"I don't understand what I'm meant to do. I really don't. It was five yards short of the green. I'm hitting good shots and dropping from hazards. Cannot get the wind wrong."

Despite an opening round 73, Scheffler remains on the fringes of the tournament. Six behind Wyndham Clark, JJ Spaun, Tommy Fleetwood and Ryan Gerard and five behind Nick Taylor, Scheffler is only two back of Ludvig Aberg and Rory McIlroy, one back of Xander Schauffele, tied with Cameron Young, and two clear of Matt Fitzpatrick.

After an impressive round of 67 to share the first-round lead, Fleetwood is the slight favourite at 13/2 ahead of 15/2 Spaun and 8/1 Scheffler.
