Sandown's feature event of the Flat season is the Eclipse on Saturday and it looks like a fascinating renewal, with the eight-runner field set to be the biggest since Enable’s success back in 2019.
The latest horse racing betting tips for Saturday's meeting at Sandown from Racing Post tipster Phill Anderson.
15:35 – Dancing Gemini @ 7/1
13:15 - Spanish Blaze @ 2/1
13:50 – Twilight Calls @ 10/3
15:35 – Dancing Gemini @ 7/1
The Eclipse is one of the most prestigious middle distance races of the season and it looks like a cracking renewal this year with the Derby winner, City Of Troy, bidding to back up his famous success a month ago.
His claims are obvious and his odds on price accurately reflects his chance of winning but the eight runners give the race a nice each-way look and Aidan O’Brien’s best three-year-old takes up a sizeable chunk of the market.
It may be worth taking him on with one at an each-way sort of price and the one that might be best suited to the task is another from the Classic generation, Dancing Gemini.
He was highly progressive last season, following up a maiden success at Newbury with a Listed win in the Flying Scotsman Stakes and his return run in the French 2,000 Guineas was full of promise.
Not much went right for him behind City Of Troy at Epsom subsequently but there were excuses, given that he met trouble in running before shaping like a non-stayer at the new trip.
The drop back to one mile and two furlongs is surely in his favour this time and a return to a more conventional track should also suit given that he didn’t look completely at home at Epsom.
He ought to get a nice tow into the race from the likes of Ghostwriter and City Of Troy’s pacemaker, Hans Andersen, both of whom are drawn on his inside and if he gets a decent position in the box seat from stall six, he looks capable of outrunning his odds with the potential of more to come on ground that should be ideal for him.
13:15 - Spanish Blaze @ 2/1
Kicking off the Eclipse card is a seven furlong handicap and one that ought to run well is Spanish Blaze.
He came on from a promising enough reappearance when too keen at Goodwood to win a course and distance handicap dropping back in trip last month and he won that in a better style than the winning margin suggested.
A return to quicker ground looks to be in his favour and he can continue his progression with just a 4lb rise in the weights to cope with here.
13:50 – Twilight Calls @ 10/3
The Group 3 Sprint Stakes has an open look to it this year but things could play out nicely for Twilight Calls.
He’s a hold-up performer who is best when coming off a strong pace and there’s every chance a decent gallop will be on here, with the likes of Live In The Dream, Apollo One, Desperate Hero and last year’s winner Equality all likely to go forward.
If that is the case, it could set up well for this son of Twilight Son and while he’ll need a bit of luck in running from stall one, it’s usually a major advantage to be drawn on the far rail over this course and distance.
Drying ground is perfect for him and first-time cheekpieces could help eke out a bit more so he looks like a value play against the favourite, who has a higher than ideal draw in stall eight.
