Australian Football: Ryan backs Socceroos to make Qatar

Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan is confident they have what is takes to make their way through the  World Cup qualifying play-offs and book their ticket to Qatar.

Australia have yet to qualify for the World Cup despite looking bang on course at one stage. They were top of Group B for a good stint but a poor run of form saw them slip down the standings.

Crucial play-off games

Saudi Arabia and Japan jumped above them into the two automatic slots with the Socceroos having to settle for third spot and the play-offs.

It is not ideal but at least they still have the chance to get the job done. First of all they must beat the UAE and then Peru in one-off games to book their spot.

Coach Graham Arnold was missing some key players in the final games of the group stages but will welcome them back for the play-offs. And Ryan is feeling in an upbeat mood heading into the UAE game.

Ryan feeling confident

"Based on the last camp we've got some real key personnel that will be fit and all that again, coming back. We blooded some new talent in the last camp as well,” Ryan told reporters.

"We've given guys some great experience and they showed also that they stepped up and it creates more competition for spots. Using all of those tools and putting all of that into place, I believe very much so that we can go on and qualify for Qatar come the end of the year."
