Women's Six Nations format

The Women's Six Nations format mirrors that of the men's game, with the team that finishes on top of the standings after the five rounds of fixtures crowned winners of the competition.

Like the men's tournament, any team which wins all five of their matches will secure the Grand Slam, while the Triple Crown is up for grabs if any of the four Home Nations (England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales) are able to beat all of the other three.

The team which finishes bottom of the Women's Six Nations standings is given the status of Wooden Spoon winners.

Women's Six Nations history

The Women's Six Nations began in 1995 as the Home Nations, with internationals taking place between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The tournament then expanded to become the Five Nations in 1998 with France joining the original four members.

For a brief period, between 1999 and 2001, Spain replaced Ireland in the competition.

In 2001, the Six Nations was officially born in its current format as Ireland returned to represent the sixth team.

It was not until 2007 when Italy replaced Spain in the Women's Six Nations to see the tournament become aligned with the lineup of the men's edition.
