Wales start their Autumn International campaign on Sunday afternoon and Warren Gatland’s men could be in for a bruising contest when they host Fiji - who leapfrogged them into the top 10 of the world rankings in July.
The hosts have not had the happiest of years in 2024, winning just one of their nine matches, and that victory came against Australian Super Rugby side Queensland Reds in their last fixture back in July.
Meanwhile, Mick Byrne’s Fiji have enjoyed a very successful year, capped off with a record-extending seventh Pacific Nations Cup title after a resounding 41-17 success over Japan, but their defeat to Scotland last weekend will no doubt have provided Wales hope of success.
Wales to win -6 handicap - 1/1
While Wales may not have had results go their way in 2024, they do boast an impressive record over the Flying Fijians and they can call upon their previous successes to put an end to their current losing streak at home.
Warren Gatland’s men have lost each of their last three internationals at the Principality Stadium - all of which coming in this year’s Six Nations against Scotland (27-26), France (45-24) and Italy (24-21) - but Wales have won 12 of their 14 total meetings with Fiji, losing just once at the 2007 World Cup (38-34).
Fiji were thoroughly impressive in the Pacific Nations Cup as they cruised past Samoa, Tonga, USA and Japan to claim that title, but they have not had the happiest of times when facing off against Tier 1 nations, winning just 16 of their 99 total meetings with sides from the Six Nations or Rugby Championship.
This record should provide Wales with the confidence of claiming victory on home soil and they should have more than enough quality to remain at least a converted try ahead, particularly given how easy it was for Scotland to carve Fiji open last weekend.
Dewi Lake to score a try anytime - 6/4
Wales no longer have a standout back to rely upon for consistent tries, with the retirements of the likes of Leigh Halfpenny and George North over recent years, and so it may come down to the power and drive of the scrum to take them over the line on Sunday.
One man who is finding plenty of joy in the tryscorer market for Wales is hooker Dewi Lake, and the Welsh captain could lead by example again on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Ospreys star scored three tries over the course of the summer internationals against South Africa and Australia and, if he can break through the stubborn Springboks backline, he should back himself to repeat that feat against the Fijians.
Jiuta Wainiqolo to score a try anytime - 6/4
Fiji are known for their physicality and strength but they have a number of speedy backs that could also cause the Welsh backline damage.
Wing Jiuta Wainiqolo is one of those to look out for for the visitors and he was headline news in Wales last week after scoring a sensational solo try for Toulon, running the length of the field and evading multiple challenges in the process.
Wainiqolo has two tries in his last three appearances for the Top 14 side and the pacy back could be more than capable of replicating this form on the international stage.
