Scotland go in search of a fourth consecutive win on their summer tour of North and South America when they face Uruguay on Saturday evening.
This looks likely to be their toughest test yet, but with a number of key players returning to the squad, Gregor Townsend’s men look to have enough to see off their opponents.
The Scots have done more travelling and played more games than the other Northern Hemisphere sides, but their confidence will gain a significant lift if they can seal another victory.
1st Half Betting 2-Way: Scotland -22 @ 10/11
Coach Townsend will be delighted with how his squad have performed in the last month and has played down talk of fatigue going into their toughest match of the tour.
Scotland will play their 17th Test of the last 12 months and their recent performances suggest they have got stronger for their tricky schedule.
Townsend’s men are currently ranked sixth in the world, 11 places above Saturday’s opponents Uruguay.
On paper, this looks the hardest task of their summer schedule, although Los Teros go into the clash having lost their last three games.
They were all against teams above them in the rankings, but the manner of the defeats will come as a concern to coach Rodolfo Ambrosio.
A 73-0 whitewash against New Zealand in October was followed by a 43-28 defeat on home soil to France earlier this month.
A home clash against South American rivals Argentina last weekend looked like a good opportunity to put up a more positive display, but they were overrun again and lost 79-5 to the Pumas.
Winning Margin: Scotland 36-40 @ 15/2
The Calcutta Cup holders started the tour with crushing 73-12 victory over Chile, running in 11 tries at the TD Place Stadium in Ottawa.
The USA, currently ranked 19th in the world, were next on the agenda and although they made life tougher for Scotland, Townsend’s squad crossed six times in a 42-7 success.
A week later, Chile were the next task and once again the Scots made light work of their opponents.
Eight tries and six conversions saw the tourists run out 52-11 winners, taking their points total on tour to 167 in three matches.
Baring in mind what happened against the Pumas, Uruguay seem unlikely to be able to hold Scotland’s attacking threat and at least another four tries looks likely.
First Try Scorer - Duhan Van der Merwe @ 5/1
Arguably Scotland’s most effective attacking weapon in recent years, Duhan Van der Merwe has been used sparingly during this summer tour.
The winger has played in just one of the opening three matches, scoring a try in the win over the United States.
He has been brought back into the fold though for Saturday’s clash in Montevideo and expect the 29-year-old to have a big impact.
Van der Merwe has scored 135 points in 40 appearances for Scotland since making his debut in 2020 and one more try will see him become his country’s leading try-scorer. He is currently level with Stuart Hogg on 27.
