South Africa v Wales: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Wales start off their summer internationals with a tricky test at Twickenham, where they will face world champions South Africa on Saturday.

The Springboks have not taken to the field since their October success in Paris - where they edged to a 12-11 victory over New Zealand in the final - but they will be expected to comfortably see off a Welsh side that had a torrid time of things in the 2024 Six Nations.

Warren Gatland’s men finished bottom of the pile in this year’s tournament and, with just one win from their last seven fixtures, they could struggle this weekend.

South Africa v Wales betting tips and predictions

South Africa to win by 21-25 points - 6/1

10 of Rassie Erasmus’s 23-man squad for Saturday’s fixture featured in their World Cup final success and this experience and quality should help the Springboks to a healthy victory over the out-of-form Welsh.

The likes of Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit - who captains the side in the absence of usual skipper Siyi Kolisi - will bring height and power to the pack, while the crafty nature of scrum-half Faf de Klerk has been the difference maker on many occasions for the Springboks.

South Africa have won 10 of their last 11 internationals and, while they have had to grind out victories against stronger opposition, they have a tendency to overwhelm weaker, underprepared sides - as proved in their World Cup demolitions of Romania (76-0) and Tonga (49-18).

This Wales side is rife with inexperience and, with the retirement of George North, lacks a star man in the attacking areas and this could prove costly. The Dragons were beaten in all five of their Six Nations fixtures this year and two of their last three defeats have come via a margin between 21 and 25 points and so another winner in this market could be on the cards.

Over 54.5 points - 10/11

South Africa and Wales faced each other in a friendly prior to the World Cup last year - which the Springboks ran away with in a comfortable 52-16 in Cardiff - and another high scoring encounter could be in store again at Twickenham.

The Springboks have the ability to put opponents to the sword when at their best and they should have scored many more points in their dominant win over the Dragons back in August, with Manie Libbok missing two conversions as well as two penalties on the day.

Wales may not be the same free-scoring force of old, but they do possess their own qualities to trouble the Springbok defence, while fly-half Sam Costelow converted each of his five kicks at the Six Nations as well as going three for three in their August friendly defeat.

With both sides able to shine on their day, an exciting contest should be expected and a points-laden battle could be enjoyed.

Makazole Mapimpi to score anytime - 8/11

The Springboks are known for their powerful forwards and driving over the line on a regular basis but it could be one of their backs that gets the most joy on Saturday.

Sharks winger and centre Makazole Mapimpi starred for the Springboks in France and scored a hat-trick in their drubbing of Romania in the pool stages, while he also ranks joint fifth in the all-time try charts for the Springboks with 26 - although he is some way off leader Bryan Habana’s impressive tally of 67.

Mapimpi’s first ever international try came in a 22-20 defeat to Wales back in 2018 and so he will be hoping to double his tally against the Dragons this weekend.
