Canada v Scotland: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The summer internationals come thick and fast on Saturday and an intriguing encounter looks in store at the TD Place Stadium in Ottawa, Ontario as Canada face an inexperienced Scotland side filled with debutants.

This will be the first rugby union international held on Canadian soil for almost two years, with the last home match for Les Rouges coming in July 2022, where the hosts were beaten by Spain in an entertaining 57-34 defeat.

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend is using the summer fixtures to give minutes to many new faces in the squad, with five players set to make their debuts from the off on Saturday as well as a further five set to come off the bench, including Northampton Saints hooker Robbie Smith, who enters the set-up on the back of lifting the Premiership trophy last month.

Canada v Scotland betting tips and predictions

Scotland -36 - 10/11

Despite a starting XV lacking in experience - Oyonnax prop Rory Sutherland is the only player to have been capped more than eight times - Gregor Townsend will be expecting his squad to be strong enough to comfortably beat Canada, who have largely struggled when facing nations currently in the world’s top 10.

Les Rouges have not faced any of the best rugby nations since 2021 but their last four meetings with these countries have resulted in heavy defeats - New Zealand (63-0), South Africa (66-7), Wales (68-12) and England (70-14).

Scotland have the superior head-to-head record against Canada with four wins from their five total meetings and two of their last three encounters have seen the Scots win by a margin of at least 38 points - a 41-0 thrashing in 2008 and a 48-10 victory in 2018, which was the last time the two nations met.

Josh Bayliss to score a try anytime - 13/8

Due to the number of debutants and general inexperience of Scotland's starting XV, there are very few players that have managed to open their account for their country prior to the weekend’s fixture.

Only fly-half Ross Thompson and number eight Josh Bayliss have scored points for Scotland and the latter could be one to look out for in the try market - with the 26-year-old being the only starter to have scored an international try after going over against Italy in a warm-up match for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Bayliss has scored 10 tries for Bath and the bruising forward could be key in driving through the Canadian defence on Saturday. He managed one try in the Premiership last season as his side made it to the play-off final and he could be an outside shout in the tryscorer market this weekend.

Cooper Coats to score a try anytime - 9/2

While Scotland are expected to ease to victory on Saturday, Canada do possess quality within their ranks that could trouble the defence of the visitors and they may be able to get a try on the board themselves.

Fullback Cooper Coats could be the man to help drive them forward in this contest, with the Halifax Tars man scoring nine tries in nine international appearances so far for Les Rouges.

Coats also has an impressive 193 points from 15 appearances for the Canada Sevens side and his pace could be a big help for the hosts as they look to keep the scoreline credible. He is a tempting option at 9/2 to stun the inexperienced Scots.
