Australia v Wales: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Wales have not won on Australian soil for 55 years and Warren Gatland's side will be up against it when they take on the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday.

It’s the dawn of a new era for Australia, with New Zealander Joe Schmidt preparing for his first game in charge of the national side following the departure of Eddie Jones.

Schmidt was handed the role back in January, so has been forced to wait patiently before seeing his side take the field for the first time.

With plenty of fresh faces in the Wallabies squad, Schmidt is looking to put his imprint on an Australia side that lost its way under Jones and crashed out of the pool stage of the 2023 World Cup in France.

Wales head into this one on the back of winning the wooden spoon at the 2024 Six Nations and losing 41-13 at the hands of reigning world champions South Africa at Twickenham last month.

The Wallabies will certainly fancy their chances going into the weekend and it might well be a one-sided affair at Allianz Stadium.

Australia v Wales betting tips and predictions

Australia -14.5 handicap - 11/10

Wales have only managed one win against Australia Down Under and you have to go back to 21st June 1969 the last time the Welsh managed to beat the Wallabies in their own backyard.

That was a famous 19-16 victory and it was in Sydney they managed to achieve the feat but at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Allianz Stadium will be the stage for Saturday’s game and it’s hard not to see the hosts coming out on top and overcoming the -14.5 handicap on offer here.

Wales inflicted a 40-6 drubbing of the Australians the last time these sides met at the 2023 World Cup, in a result that contributed to the departure of Jones.

Australia might well have revenge on their minds and they should get it this weekend backed by a home crowd excited by the start of Schmidt’s tenure.

Queensland Reds star Liam Wright looks set to skipper the team and become the 89th captain of the Wallabies, while Tom Lynagh is expected to earn his first cap at fly-half.

Players is form will be selected and Australia have the quality to overcome a Wales side that will be low on confidence after recent results.

Australia to score first and win - 5/6

Expected the Wallabies to come flying out of the gates and try to put this Wales side under severe pressure.

The Welsh have been guilty in some games of making slow starts to matches and they simply can’t afford to do that in Sydney this weekend.

With Lynagh pulling the strings at fly-half, the Wallabies will look to pressure on a Welsh side that have seen so many of their golden generation retire in recent years.

What Gatland would give to have an Alun Wyn Jones, a Dan Bigger or a George North in his starting lineup this weekend.

Australia can make the most of Wales’ lack of experience and are worth backing to score the first points of the game.

1st half betting - Australia -6 handicap - 10/11

Given we expect a fast start from Australia, it’s also worth considering the hosts in the handicap market at half-time on Saturday.

Schmidt will want his side to stamp their authority on the match and Wales’ tendency to start slowly in some games, as they did when trailing 20-0 at home to Scotland in the last Six Nations, should see the Wallabies fall on the right side of the first-half handicap here.
