Wigan Warriors v Huddersfield Giants: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Wigan Warriors were crowned world champions last weekend following a hard-fought victory over NRL giants Penrith Panthers and they will turn their focus back to domestic matters with this Super League clash against Huddersfield Giants.

Wigan won their opener against Castleford a fortnight ago, while the Giants were cut down to size by St Helens last week after their round one clash with Leigh Leopards.

The Warriors are warm favourites for this clash and it is hard to see anything other than a home win at the DW Stadium.

Wigan Warriors v Huddersfield Giants betting predictions

Wigan Warriors to win by 1 to 12 points – 9/5

Wigan have won nine of their last ten meetings with Huddersfield and they are short-priced favourites at just 1/6 to extend that sequence.

That looks a fair assessment but it may be wise to tread with caution as the Warriors' battle with Penrith is likely to have taken plenty out of the legs, particularly as the match was played on a heavy pitch.

Liam Byrne and Kruise Leeming look to be injury doubts for the champions following that match, but otherwise Matt Peet can select from virtually the same squad who took on the Australian premiers.

Jake Connor should return for the Giants but it is hard to see them upsetting the odds and a Wigan win by no more than 12 points could be the best bet.

Six of the last seven meetings have been settled by a winning margin of no more than two converted tries, and although Huddersfield lost heavily to St Helens last week, another close contest is expected at the DW Stadium.

It was 22-6 to Wigan when the pair last met at this venue but prior to that they were beaten by 10, 4 and 13 points, while they ran out 14-6 winners in 2019.

That kind of result looks beyond them this week, but they could give the Warriors more of a fight than is expected.

Huddersfield Giants +8.5 first-half start – 8/15

Huddersfield often put up a decent fight at the DW Stadium and they stay competitive for at least 40 minutes at the home of the Super League champions.

Ian Watson's men were well beaten by St Helens last week but their opening-round win at Leigh was an impressive result and there could be more to come from the Giants, who are looking to respond following a dismal 2023 campaign.

They have posted 12 points or more in three of their last five visits to Wigan and a similar effort could see them avoid being blown away by the Cherry & Whites who may show early signs of fatigue following last Saturday's gruelling win over Penrith Panthers.

With that in mind, backing a tight first half at the DW Stadium could be the way to go with Huddersfield receiving an 8.5-point start looking generous.
