Wakefield Trinity marked their return to Super League with a stunning 14-12 win over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley and they may prove no pushovers for Hull KR on Thursday, either.
KR also opened with a victory but they had to rely on a golden-point drop goal to beat Castleford Tigers and they can expect another close encounter in round two.
Wakefield Trinity +10 handicap - 10/11
Wakefield Trinity lost just once last season on their way to a trophy treble of the Championship, League Leaders' Shield and 1895 Cup, and they announced themselves back in the big time with a shock 14-12 win at big-spending Leeds Rhinos in round one of Super League last week.
Wakey have also splashed the cash after spending a year in the second tier and their determination to mix it with the big boys was clear to see at Headingley last Saturday, where they didn't look out of place against their illustrious hosts.
Trinity were never behind in that contest, and although a nervy final few moments were played out, they fully deserved their victory and will be confident of more in the coming weeks.
Things don't get any easier in round two, though, and Wakefield will need to be at their best once again to match Hull KR on Thursday.
Rovers went all the way to the Grand Final last term, losing out to champions Wigan only 9-2 at Old Trafford.
The Robins were easily the best of the rest in 2024 and they have strengthened their side in the off-side as they look to maintain their place at the business end of the standings.
Things didn't quite go according to plan in round one, as they were held to a 18-18 draw with Castleford Tigers on home soil at Craven Park, with Mikey Lewis's drop-goal in extra-time sparing the blushes of the home side who were red-hot favourites to ease past Cas.
Willie Peters' men are once again warm favourites this week, but again, they may not have things all their own way against an enthusiastic underdog.
Wakefield have won four of their last seven home fixtures with Hull KR and they will be desperate to build on last week's opening success, and they look a decent bet with a 10-point start on the handicap.
Rovers have been convincing winners on their last two trips to Belle Vue, but as results last week showed when five of the six favourites lost on the handicap, anything can happen in the early stages of a season and Wakey can take advantage of a Hull KR side who are not yet up to full speed.
An away win still looks likely but the home side can limit the damage and stay in touch with their high-profile opponents.
Max Jowitt to score a try - 10/3
There is a lack of tempting value in most of the match betting beyond the handicap or winning margin markets, so it may pay to get involved with a couple of warm tryscorer wagers.
And two players who stand out should be backed to continue their flying starts in round two.
For the home side, Max Jowitt looks a solid option to cross the whitewash at 10/3 following his starring role in last week's win at Leeds.
Jowitt claimed ten of Wakefield's 14 points scored at Headinley with two tries and two goals to his name following an all-action performance.
The full-back was at the heart of the majority of Trinity's best attacks and he could make his mark once more against a Rovers side who struggled to keep a lid on Castleford's attacking men in their opener last week.
Joe Burgess to score a try - 21/20
Joe Burgess is at the top of the tryscoring leaderboard after bagging a hat-trick for Hull KR last week and he could increase his early-season tally by getting over the line at Belle Vue on Thursday.
Burgess proved too hot to handle against the Tigers on the wing last week, filling the void left by all-time Super League tryscorer, Ryan Hall, who has returned to Leeds.
Those are big shoes to fill but Burgess slotted in nicely and he remains a decent bet to add to his three-try tally with at least one score against Wakefield.
