Super League Grand Final Outright tips and predictions from Alex Hilton

Wigan Warriors finished top of the table at the end of the Super League regular season, holding off challengers Catalans Dragons and St Helens to lift the League Leaders' Shield on points difference.

Now they are looking to land their sixth Super League title, as they prepare for an Old Trafford showdown against the Dragons in the Grand Final on Saturday.

Setting the scene….

Wigan approach the Grand Final on a fantastic run of form, having won their last ten matches. Included in that run was a stunning 34-0 win at Catalans which knocked the French side off top spot in the Super League standings.

Matt Peet's are full of confidence and they will fancy their chances of being crowned champions for the sixth time in the Super League era. The Warriors hammered Hull KR in the semi-finals last week, but things are likely to be much closer against the French side.

Catalans' form has been a bit more patchy in the closing weeks of the season and their only previous Grand Final appearance ended in a 12-10 defeat to St Helens in 2021.

These two each scored a league-leading 722 points in the regular season, but there is a good chance they will cancel each other out in Manchester and another tight encounter is expected.

Wigan Warriors to win by one to 12 points @ 29/20

Wigan and Catalans have generally found points easy to come by in 2023.

In their three meetings this season they have handed out a beating to each other, while the opening fixture early on in the campaign resulted in an 18-10 win to the Dragons and that looks a better guide as to what may happen on Saturday.

Grand Finals are notoriously tight, 16 of the 25 deciders have been settled by 12 points or fewer, and this latest contest is unlikely to be an open affair.

The Warriors also had the best defensive record in Super League this season, conceding 60 points less than Catalans, who shipped 420, and they could snuff out the Dragons on Saturday.

Alex Hilton's Tip:

Wigan haven't conceded more than 12 points in any of their last eight matches, including a 34-0 win at Catalans, and that bodes well ahead of the final.

Six of those fixtures have also seen the table-toppers limit their opponents to single-figure scores, so the 29/20 that the Warriors win by one to 12 points looks decent value.

Under 28.5 total match points @ 4/6

Catalans' last trip to Old Trafford was in 2021 when they were edged out 12-10 by St Helens and a similar outcome looks possible this week.

The Dragons ran out 12-6 winners against the Saints in last week's semi-final in Perpignan and defences could come to the fore this Saturday, too.

A damp afternoon is forecast in Manchester prior to kick-off and, although things may dry out during the game, conditions could make handling the ball tricky. Nerves could play a part, too, on such a big occasion, so points may be hard to come by.

Alex Hilton's Tip:

The last nine Grand Finals have yielded points totals of 36, 22, 12, 29, 16, 30, 18, 42 and 20, so they are rarely blow-out occasions.

It's 4/6 that Saturday's total fails to hit 29 and that looks like another decent bet. The Dragons boasted the third tightest defence in Super League this season, so both backlines could be hard to breach.

Wigan penalty first scoring play @ 5/1
Catalans penalty first scoring play @ 6/1

A nail-biting contest is expected in possible damp conditions at Old Trafford, so points could be at a premium in the Grand Final.

And with that in mind, it may pay to back either side to open the scoring with a successful penalty kick at juicy prices.

Both sides have excellent goal kickers, so any shot at the sticks has a good chance of being successful.

It's 12/5 that a successful drop goal is scored too and that is often a wager that pays off with sides looking to put the game to bed in the closing stages.

Alex Hilton's Tip:

Harry Smith landed seven kicks from seven attempts in Wigan's semi-final win over Hull KR last week, while Adam Keighran has been hugely successful with the boot for Catalans this season, too.

With the pressure on this week, back Wigan to open the scoring with a penalty goal at 5/1, and follow it up with the 6/1 that Catalans score first via a penalty goal.

Each side will be keen to post points at every opportunity, so either bet represents a great way to lock in an early Grand Final profit.
