St Helens v Wigan Warriors: Prediction, Tips and Odds

A Good Friday staple in the world of rugby league, St Helens versus Wigan is for many the Super League's leading derby, and the pair's latest meeting at the Totally Wicked Stadium promises to be another humdinger of an occasion.

Wigan to win - 6/5

There is rarely much room for niceties whenever fierce rivals St Helens and Wigan Warriors lock horns, and this year's traditional Easter meeting promises to be just as fiery.

A sell-out crowd is set to descend on the Totally Wicked Stadium and they should be royally entertained by arguably the two best sides in Super League at present.

Reigning champions Wigan are 5/4 to win successive Grand Finals this season with Saints a 12/5 shot. It's 7/1 for closest competitors Warrington, illustrating just how superior these great rivals are to the rest of Super League currently.

And on the evidence of the opening rounds of 2024 that stance is more than justified. Wigan boast the only perfect start with four wins from four, while St Helens have four wins and a defeat to show for their efforts in the first five rounds of league action.

Even at this early stage it could be argued that this is a dress rehearsal for October's Grand Final at Old Trafford and it could be champions Wigan who draw first blood for the season at the home of their great foes.

There has been an unerring efficiency about the Warriors so far, and their outstanding 16-12 World Club Challenge success over NRL side Penrith Panthers was no more than they deserved.

Wigan have won every honour available under highly respected coach Matt Peet, who earlier this month penned a seven-year contract extension with the Super League champions.

Peet inherited a faltering attack when taking the reins ahead of the 2022 season but he has turned the Warriors into a points-scoring machine. They posted 818 regular-season points in his first year at the helm and a further 722 last term, and to date in 2024 the champions have amassed 144 points in just four league outings.

Wigan have a scintillating backline featuring mercurial talents Bevan French and Jai Field, and their attacking brilliance could prove decisive against Saints on Friday.

Bevan French first tryscorer - 14/1

Bevan French has fulfilled a number of roles across Wigan's backline since arriving at the DW Stadium midway through the 2019 season.

Accommodating the Aussie alongside compatriot Jai Field has been difficult for Wigan boss Peet but he appears to have settled on playing Field at full-back and allowing French to cause havoc in the halves.

Stopping one is hard enough but trying to contain both is a devilish job, as many sides in the Super League have discovered.

French, in particular, has started the 2024 season on fire and has already crossed for six tries in five outings for the Warriors, including a hat-trick in last week's cup win over Sheffield Eagles.

The 2022 Man of Steel will be a constant threat whenever he gets the ball in his hands and he could add to his seven tries against Saints with the opener at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

St Helens penalty first scoring play - 7/1
Wigan penalty first scoring play- 8/1

If the Good Friday encounter is as tight as expected then don't be surprised if either side opts to take a shot at goal when the opportunity arises.

It can be so important to put points on the board in games of this magnitude and backing both St Helens and Wigan to open the scoring with a successful penalty goal looks a fair play.

St Helens did exactly that in last week's Challenge Cup win at Leeds and splitting stakes between the Warriors and Saints seems a prudent approach, as both sides will be keen to come away with points whenever they stage a foray into the opposition 20.
