St Helens v Salford Red Devils: Tips, Predictions and Odds

St Helens will be looking to maintain their perfect start to the 2024 Super League season when they play host to Salford Red Devils on Friday night.

The Saints head into this game at the Totally Wicked Stadium after a positive start to the campaign, which has seen them overcome the London Broncos, Huddersfield Giants and Leigh Leopards in the opening three rounds.

Friday’s game will provide the sternest test of the season so far for head coach Paul Wellens and his side, as they face a Salford outfit that have won their last two outings against the Castleford Tigers and Hull KR after an opening defeat at Leeds Rhinos.

St Helens v Salford Red Devils betting tips and predictions

St Helens -14 Handicap - Evens

St Helens' perfect start after the first three rounds can largely be credited to three outstanding defensive displays.

Saints have conceded just eight points across those three matches, with a 40-4 win over the Broncos followed by a 28-0 victory over the Giants and a 12-4 scoreline again the Leopards.

Defences win titles and if St Helens continue with this standard of play without the ball, they will take some stopping to be denied Grand Final glory this season after missing out on the crown last term to rivals Wigan Warriors.

That defence is a decisive factor in any decision to back St Helens in the Handicap market at -14 on Friday night.

Saints have the ability to suffocate opposition attacks and in turn have quality strike runners when they themselves are in the red zone.

Salford are a strong team and should be in the mix come the play-offs but they have lost all of their last three Super League meetings with St Helens.

The Red Devils have also struggled at the home of the Saints, having lost all of their last 17 visits.

Expect that trend to continue and, because of Saints' outstanding defence, it’s worth considering the hosts in the Handicap market.

Total points - under 36 - 11/10

With Saints looking set to keep Salford to a low score at the Totally Wicked Stadium, there is value to be had with going for under 36 total points on the night.

When these sides last met in Super League, 33 points were scored in a 18-15 win for St Helens at AJ Bell Stadium.

Under Wellens, the Merseyside outfit have improved their defensive shape since then and, on home soil, look capable of stifling this Red Devils’ attack.

With Saints scoring an average of 26.6 points per game in their first three outings, looking to under 36 total points catches the eye for this one.

Tommy Makinson Anytime tryscorer - Evens

Having scored in his last two Super League encounters against Salford, it’s hard to pass up St Helens’ winger Tommy Makinson getting on the scoresheet again on Friday.

The experienced wing scored an important try last time out against Leigh and will be confident of adding to his tally against the Red Devils this week.

While too much should not be read into pre-season friendlies, it’s also worth noting Makinson scored a try in Saints’ 52-10 win over Salford at the start of last month.

It feels like Makinson has been on the Super League scene for an age, and he has, having made his debut for St Helens back in 2011.

However, at the age of 32, Makinson still has a few more years of top level rugby league ahead of him and his finishing prowess is likely to be on full display when Salford make the short trip to St Helens on Friday night.
