St Helens v Catalans Dragons: Prediction, Tips and Odds

St Helens will look to pull away at the top of the Super League table when they welcome Catalans Dragons to Merseyside on Friday night.

Saints have struggled in this fixture over recent years but their strong home form will make them the firm favourites to end their winless run against the Dragons.

Catalans have always been a formidable outfit when playing in the home comforts of Perpignan but away from the picturesque city in the south of France they have struggled across the Channel.

Losing heavily to Leigh Leopards and Wigan Warriors in their last two away games in Super League, a tough night looks to be in store for head coach Steve McNamara and his side at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

St Helens v Catalans Dragons betting tips and predictions

St Helens - 13.5 handicap – 11/10

Saints will be determined to right some wrongs on Friday night as they look to end their five-match losing streak against the Catalans Dragons.

The last time these sides met was last month in Perpignan, as the Dragons edged out a 14-8 victory at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Catalans are a tough prospect on their own patch but on their travels across the Channel, they have not been able to find that same level of performance in recent weeks.

Both Leigh and Wigan put exactly 30 points past the Dragons respectively in Catalans’ last two away games in the Super League.

Meanwhile, Saints have been performing admirably on their own patch, winning their last four Super League games at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Considering how poor Catalans’ defence has been on the road of late, and with Saints scoring 40 points past the Leeds Rhinos last time out, look to the hosts to cover the -13.5 handicap on offer here.

Tommy Makinson first tryscorer - 6/1

With seven tries already this season, Tommy Makinson is a player to look out for in the first tryscorer market on Friday night.

Makinson scored against the Dragons the last time these sides met in April and he also scored a try last time out against the Rhinos.

One of the most prolific tryscorers in the history of Super League, the 32-year-old continues to be a real threat in the wide channels.

With St Helens looking to make an explosive start in this game to get Catalans on the back foot, Makinson is good value at 6/1 to open the scoring at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Jack Welsby anytime tryscorer - 7/5

With 11 tries in Super League already this season, Jack Welsby is just one try behind frontrunner Liam Marshall in the tryscorer standings.

Welsby will be determined to go level with Wigan star Marshall on Friday night and could even surpass the Warriors wing before the weekend.

Along with Makinson, Welsby was the only other St Helens player to score a try in the last meeting with the Catalans.

Welsby also finds himself in great form after scoring two tries in the comfortably 40-10 victory over the Rhinos last week.

The utility back has the ability to pop up with tries from anywhere on the field and his support lines are some of the best in the Super League.

Given his recent form and the fact he has proven he knows how to cause this Dragons’ defence problems, Welsby is worth considering at 7/5 to score anytime against Catalans in this one.
