London Broncos v St Helens: Prediction, Tips and Odds

St Helens will be aiming to end the weekend as they started it, at the top of the Super League standings, but to do that they must gain a positive result against the division's bottom club London Broncos at the Twickenham Stoop on Sunday.

Wigan Warriors' 10-8 victory at Castleford Tigers on Friday night means the Saints will start this game in second place, but they will be confident of returning to the summit by seeing off a London side that have won just once all season.

This game will take on extra significance for the Broncos, however, as this will be the first time they have played at the Stoop in over a decade and the last time they faced Saints at the venue they emerged victorious.

London Broncos v St Helens betting tips and predictions

St Helens -34.5 handicap - 1/1

There is no two ways about it, Saints should return to the top of Super League by beating the Broncos and they are expected to do so in emphatic fashion.

Paul Wellens' side have won 10 of their 13 matches in the division this season, including each of their last three - against Catalans Dragons, Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers.

The Saints have racked up an impressive 124 points across those last three victories, including 60 in their most recent away clash with Cas, while only conceding 26.

That miserly defensive record is no surprise as they have conceded the fewest points in Super League this season, shipping on average just over 10-per-game.

By contrast, London have scored the fewest points (134) and conceded the most (510), while they have lost 12 of their 13 matches since returning to Super League, with their only victory coming against fellow strugglers Hull FC.

These two sides last met during the opening round of the season, with the Saints running out comfortable 40-4 winners at the Totally Wicked Stadium and a similar outcome is anticipated on Sunday.

Wellens will certainly expect his side to overcome a -34.5 deficit in the handicap market and despite the boost the Broncos may receive from returning to the Stoop, that is unlikely to be enough to bridge the sizable gap between these two teams.

Tommy Makinson to score two or more tries - 21/20

Sunday's match will be the first for Saints since it was confirmed that winger Tommy Makinson would be joining Super League rivals Catalans at the end of the season.

Makinson had previously announced in May that he would be bringing his 14-year stay with St Helens to an end, but confirmation of his impending move to the Dragons will have added an extra bite of a reality for Saints’ supporters.

The experienced 32-year-old has won five Super League titles, a World Club Challenge, a Challenge Cup and four League Leaders' Shields during his time at the Totally Wicked Stadium and he could add to that long list of accolades before the end of the season.

He is certainly still a key member of Wellens' side, emphasised by the eight tries he has scored in 12 Super League games this season - only Jack Welsby has more in a St Helens shirt during 2024.

The first of those efforts came in the Saints' round one victory over London and it would be no surprise to see Makinson, who has over 200 tries to his name for the club, add to that tally on Sunday and he may even underline what his side will be missing from next season by crossing more than once.

It has been a while since Makinson has scored two tries in one game, last doing so in a 28-6 win over Hull KR in August 2023, but with all eyes likely to be on him this weekend, he is more than capable of delivering.
