Huddersfield Giants v Warrington Wolves: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Huddersfield Giants meet Warrington Wolves in the second semi-final of this season's Challenge Cup, with the winner booking a Wembley date against Wigan on 8th June.

The Warriors beat Hull KR 38-6 in Doncaster on Saturday and can sit back and relax as the Giants face the Wire at St. Helens' Totally Wicked Stadium.

Warrington are one of four teams tied at the top of the Super League on 16 points, six better off than Huddersfield.

The old adage is that form goes out of the window in knockout games, but the Wolves have won the last nine cup meetings and are favoured to progress again.

Huddersfield Giants v Warrington Wolves betting tips and predictions

Warrington -8.5 2-way handicap @ 5/4

Eyebrows were raised when Warrington appointed a rookie coach in Sam Burgess, but the combination of his rugby nous and the experienced backroom team they have built around him have ensured he has made a fine start to life in the stands.

They are in the running for at least a home Eliminator, if not automatic qualification for the semi-finals through the Super League and have won five of their last six in all competitions, including an impressive 31-8 away win at St Helens in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

Huddersfield also shone in the sixth round, winning 34-6 at Catalans Dragons, but have lost three in a row coming into this game.

Ian Watson guided the Giants to the 2022 final, leading during the closing quarter against Wigan before Liam Marshall's match-winning score on 77 minutes.

Watson's squad includes several players who lack consistency but who can produce big moments, arguably making the Giants more suited to the Challenge Cup than the Super League, but that might not be enough on Sunday.

This will be the duo's first meeting of 2024, but Warrington won all three of their 2023 clashes and have also succeeded in the pair's last nine cup ties.

The most recent was a 44-24 victory in the in 2013 quarter-finals, while the Wolves also triumphed 25-16 in the 2009 final.

The occasion could be a leveller, but Warrington are a class outfit and are worth pushing to win by a margin priced on the punter's side of Evens.

Matty Ashton anytime tryscorer @ 5/4

Warrington have real firepower out wide. Both Josh Thewlis and Matt Dufty have run in eight Super League tries this season, but it is Matty Ashton who has been their cup hero.

The 25-year-old scored a hat-trick in the fifth round win over London Broncos and produced a stunning one-handed mid-air finish in the quarter-final win over Saints.

Ashton has been overshadowed by Thewlis and Dufty, but grabbed a brace in the first of Warrington and Huddersfield's three fixtures in 2023 and seems to raise his game in the cup.

Adam Swift anytime tryscorer @ 5/4

Although tipped to be on the wrong side of the result, there should be some joy for the Giants through the returning Adam Swift.

The winger is back in the matchday squad after being rested for last Saturday's defeat to Wigan, having sustained a minor groin injury in the previous week's loss to Salford.

Swift has scored 11 league tries this season and the 31-year-old looks reborn after joining Huddersfield for 2024 following a middling spell at Hull FC, against whom he scored four tries in the fifth round before also going over against the Dragons.

Last week's absence was only a precaution so he should be fresh, and, if so, he will undoubtedly test the Wire's fringe defence.
