England -18 Handicap - 5/6

England flexed their muscles with an impressive three-match series success over Tonga last autumn and they are currently on a four-match winning streak.

The Tonga triumphs helped ease the pain of England's disappointing defeat in the delayed 2021 World Cup, which saw them knocked out on home soil by Samoa at the semi-final stage in 2022.

Shaun Wane's men are now starting their lengthy preparations for a likely World Cup in 2026, with this mid-season international against France being followed by a two-match Test series with Samoa this coming autumn.

And this trip to France has been scheduled to help the French celebrate 90 years of participation in rugby league, so a party atmosphere is set to welcome the Lions to Toulouse on Saturday.

But the pleasantries are only likely to go so far, as England are red-hot favourites for victory this week and they should make little mistake in showing their superiority.

They have had little trouble doing so in the past and they have won their last 21 meetings with Les Bleus. You have to go all the way back to 1981 to find the last French victory in this fixture and on that occasion it was 5-1 to the boys in blue.

Since then they have had some proper pastings and the last showdown between these two finished 60-4 to England in a friendly at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington in April 2023.

Prior to that, the Lions ran out 42-18 victors at the 2021 World Cup and that looks a more realistic example of how this latest meeting will pan out.

Neither side is likely to be at full tilt, while there will be an air of caution surrounding the fixture with the Super League campaign at the halfway point. Most of the players taking to the pitch on Saturday will have an eye on the play-offs in that competition, so a full-throttle encounter looks unlikely.

England will expect to win comfortably, though, and an 18-point Handicap should be within reach.

Wane's men have covered that margin in their last 10 meetings with France but a full-scale hammering looks unlikely this time around.

England to win by 21-30 points - 11/4

A party atmosphere will surround the Stade Ernest-Wallon on Saturday as the French RL celebrate 90 years of competitive action in the sport and that should drive the home side to put on a telling display for the partisan crowd in the stands.

It may not be enough to lead Les Bleus to their first win over England for 44 years, but it could help them keep the scoreline competitive in Toulouse.

The winning margin in the last six meetings has been 64, 24, 20, 38, 30 and 34 and England's last trip across the Channel finished with a 30-10 victory at the Stade Gilbert Brutus in Perpignan just under three years ago.

That looks a solid barometer as to how this match pans out, so backing the visitors to win by 21-30 points looks another solid wager.

It is an outcome that would have paid out in three of the last six dust-ups between these two and England also beat Tonga by 22 points last autumn in the final match of their three-game series.

Throwing together a group of players with little preparation time is unlikely to lead to a polished performance, but the Lions have an abundance of quality in their ranks and that should see them to a comfortable triumph on Saturday afternoon.
