Bradford Bulls v St Helens Prediction, Tips and Bet Builder

Two sides that have struggled for wins over recent weeks will meet at Odsal Stadium on Saturday night as Bradford Bulls play host to St Helens.

The Bulls have made a solid if unremarkable return to Super League this season, winning five of their 15 games, but only two of those successes have come since March, a run of 10 matches.

St Helens, meanwhile, had suffered three defeats on the bounce prior to last weekend's 38-6 win over Huddersfield Giants, but they still didn't look at their fluent best against the division's bottom club.

Saints remain in the top six, but with pressure growing from the sides below them, they could do with recording a victory in West Yorkshire, as they look to make it back-to-back league wins for the first time in almost two months.

Bradford Bulls v St Helens

Bradford Bulls v St Helens Prediction

Best Bet: Bradford Bulls +10.5 @ 8/11

There is no doubt that St Helens are the stronger of these two sides and they should still go on to win this match, but there are one or two reasons to suggest that Bradford can keep this close and lose by no more than 10 points.

First of all, Saints are not in great form as, since failing to register a point in their Challenge Cup semi-final defeat to Wigan Warriors at the start of May, Paul Rowley's side have won only two of five games and both of those victories came against rock-bottom Huddersfield.

Secondly, last week's home success over the Giants came at a cost, with Mark Percival and Daryl Clark suffering injuries, while Matt Whitley and George Whitby withdrew from the squad ahead of that match.

In the case of second-row Whitley, he has suffered a serious wrist injury that has ruled him out for the remainder of the season, with that news coming off the back of wing Kyle Feldt having had his contract mutually terminated earlier this month.

All that should give Bradford belief they can even record their first victory over Saints since 2012, especially as their home record is solid, with all 10 of their points this season being picked up at Odsal.

There could certainly be some sense in backing the Bulls to win this one outright, but there is a 10-point gap between the sides in the standings for a reason.

Even if Saints are up against it at the moment, they will still expect to grind out what could be a narrow win.

Alternative Bet: Under 50.5 points @ 4/5

St Helens have accumulated 96 points across their last five Super League games - a tally of fewer than 20 per game - and 54 of those points have come in their two clashes with Huddersfield.

In their three other games during that run, Saints scored 10 points against Castleford Tigers, 16 in the loss at Leeds Rhinos and just six in the home defeat to Warrington Wolves.

The match before the run started was their 32-0 defeat to Wigan in the Challenge Cup and, all that considered, Saints are not a team currently at their fluent attacking best.

Bradford are not exactly swashbuckling in the final third either, failing to score more than 16 points in seven of their last nine matches.

There were 48 points scored when these two sides met earlier in the season - a 26-22 victory for Saints at BrewDog Stadium in March - and that may be as high as the points total gets this time around as well.

Bradford Bulls v St Helens Bet Builder Tip

  • Owen Dagnall to score a try

  • Curtis Sironen to score a try

  • Bradford Bulls under 18.5 points

    Pays 11/1

Saints have been rocked by the recent departure of eight-try top scorer Feldt, but others will now have to step up to the plate, including youngster Owen Dagnall, who is enjoying his best try-scoring season in Super League with five.

The 20-year-old has scored four of those tries across his last six appearances and despite his team's collective lack of points over that stretch, Dagnall has managed to buck the trend.

Another Saints player who flexed his try-scoring muscles recently was second-row Curtis Sironen, who will still be on a high after his brace against Huddersfield last time out.

Bradford's lack of scoring power is a concern, as they have only gone beyond 16 points twice since the start of April and they may struggle to consistently break Saints down.
