Lowest points tally, worst season start: Ruben Amorim's unwanted Manchester United records

There's no beating around the bush: Ruben Amorim is statistically one of the worst managers in Manchester United's illustrious history.

14 months on from his appointment, Manchester United have parted company with the Portuguese coach following a breakdown in relations involving chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Amorim challenged the United hierarchy following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, suggesting he had been subjected to unwanted intrusion from officials above him and that he was ready to move on when his contract expired in the summer of 2027.

“It’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decide to change,” Amorim said. “That was my point, I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”

United have opted to conclude Amorim's chapter prematurely, bringing his tumultuous reign where he won just 24 of his 63 matches - eight of which were in the Europa League - to an end.

Ruben Amorim's unwanted Manchester United records

Many considered Amorim fortunate to have retained his job in the summer following a record-breaking first campaign for all the wrong reasons.

Tasked with guiding United back into the upper echelons of the Premier League upon succeeding Erik ten Hag, Amorim led United to their lowest-ever Premier League finish and the worst in over 50 years. 42 points was also the club's lowest points tally since 1978, when the Red Devils finished 10th in the First Division under Dave Sexton.

Their 14 league defeats in a single season is their highest since recording 16 during the 1989/90 campaign under Sir Alex Ferguson.

United's poor form under Amorim seeped into the 2025/26 campaign as they endured their worst start to a Premier League season in 33 years, accruing just four points from four matches whilst bowing out of the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town of League Two.

Despite an upturn in results from October onwards, the records didn't stop there with Sunday's 1-1 draw against rivals Leeds marking the first time in the club's history that United had gone 15 away games in a row without a clean sheet.

Amorim leaves Old Trafford having lost more Premier League matches (19) than he's won (15), and possesses the worst points per game ratio of a United manager since Frank O'Farrell in 1972.

How Amorim's record compares to Manchester United predecessors

With the exception of Ralf Rangnick's interim spell, Amorim's 38.1% win percentage is comprehensively the worst of any United manager since Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

The club's progression to the Europa League final aided Amorim's overall win ratio as in the Premier League, his average of 1.23 points per game is the worst of any United manager; below even Rangnick, who averaged 1.54.

Amorim lost exactly a third of his matches in all competitions, which is the worst record of any permanent United manager since O’Farrell in the early 1970s.
