Royal Ascot: Outsiders to watch including Changingoftheguard

Royal Ascot is one of the biggest meetings of the year in Flat racing, with the five-day event at Ascot Racecourse seeing some of the best horses from around the world compete in their respective divisions.

This year’s royal meeting takes place from Tuesday 20th June through until Saturday 24th June, and all the action can be followed via the bet365 Sport Live Streaming platform

With less than a month from Royal Ascot 2023, we’ve picked a trio of outsiders who might be able to cause an upset at the meeting.

Queen Anne Stakes - Master Of The Seas @ 20/1

MASTER OF THE SEAS was denied a British Classic victory in 2021 by just a short head, finishing second in the 2,000 Guineas behind Poetic Flare at Newmarket.

Since then, he has had a few setbacks which have kept him off the track.

In his sole start last season, Charlie Appleby’s runner won the Group Three bet365 Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket. He travelled strongly in that 1m1f contest, and he produced a strong turn of foot to put the race to bed inside the final furlong.

The Godolphin runner has already been on the go in 2023, featuring three times at Meydan during the Dubai World Cup Carnival.

On his opening start of the meeting, he landed the Group Two Zabeel Mile where he looked back to his best. A couple of months later, he was third in the Group One Jebel Hatta. He was in the mix at the finish of that race, but just missed out on the top prize by less than a length.

Modern Games and Inspiral are both at the top end of the betting for the Queen Anne, and based on what they achieved last season, they deserve that position. However, if Master Of The Seas produces what he is capable of, he is a huge price at 20/1.

Prince Of Wales's Stakes - Nations Pride @ 16/1

Godolphin colt NATIONS PRIDE has had major success around the world in the last 12 months.

He won the Saratoga Derby and the Jockey Club Derby Invitational Stakes at Aqueduct last summer, while earlier this year, he prevailed in the Dubai Millennium Stakes at Meydan.

Although he has been successful three times in five starts in the UK, connections of the horse will feel he has yet to produce his very best on these shores.

The Prince Of Wales's Stakes is his opportunity to do that.

Appleby’s runner is 16/1 in the betting for the Group One contest on day three of the meeting. Those odds are very tempting as this 1m2f trip is arguably his most favourable distance.

The son of Teofilo finished a length behind Lord North in the Dubai Turf on his latest appearance when he was third of 14 runners. If he steps up on that performance, he is likely to be in the mix here.

Desert Crown and Vadeni, two of the horses at the top end of the Prince Of Wales's Stakes betting, were both beaten on their seasonal reappearances, while on ratings, Nations Pride is just 4lb lower than Bay Bridge, the highest-rated runner in the field.

Ascot Gold Cup - Changingoftheguard @ 25/1

With 2022 winner Kyprios unable to defend his crown in the race, the 2023 Ascot Gold Cup has an open feel to it, and it could be a year when an outsider causes a surprise.

Aidan O’Brien has won this race a record eight times and one of his most interesting entries is CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD, who can be backed at 25/1

The son of Galileo looked to have stamina in abundance when he blew his rivals away in the Chester Vase at the 2022 Chester May Meeting.

That put the Ballydoyle runner into the Derby picture but unfortunately for his connections, he had to settle for fifth place at Epsom in what was a respectable run in the British Classic.

Both of O’Brien’s last two Ascot Gold Cup winners (Order Of St George and Kyprios) have come from Galileo.

The star sire has not only produced multiple Derby winners, but he is now having success in the stayers’ division.

Changingoftheguard showed a lot of battling qualities at this meeting in 2022 when he won the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes. He stayed on strongly to get the better of Grand Alliance by a narrow margin.

The Irish horse made his seasonal reappearance in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester, finishing third behind Hamish.

He should come on for that run, and if the ground is ‘Good’ at Royal Ascot, his ability is likely to show in the feature race on day three.
