Rory McIlroy is 9/4 to win a major in 2025 as the Northern Irishman bids to end an 11-year drought.
McIlroy boxed off four majors shortly after his 25th birthday and it would have been impossible to believe he'd still be stuck on four more than a decade later.
McIlroy has, of course, remained at the top of golf throughout that time, and it feels like he's now had more near misses than he's had wins. He's had four runner-up finishes in his career, recently being edged out at US Opens by Wyndham Clark and Bryson DeChambeau. He also had one hand on the Claret Jug in 2022, ultimately falling short to Cameron Smith, and briefly shared the lead on Sunday at the 2021 US Open.
There's no doubt there's mental scar tissue for McIlroy on golf's biggest stages, but he remains one of the sport's premier players. He's consistently been amongst the world's best drivers and iron players throughout his career, with his short game and putting also solid; it's what's consistently put him in the mix for majors, racking up 27 top-10 finishes to go alongside his four wins.
While he's had the occasional blips, missing three straight cuts at the US Open between 2016 and 2018, missing the cut at Royal Portrush in 2019 and missing cuts at Augusta in 2021 and 2023, it would be a surprise not to see McIlroy in contention at least once in 2025.
Whether he can finally get over the line remains the big question.
