Though McIlroy was unable to follow his Dubai Desert Classic victory up with success on the PGA TOUR, recording rather mediocre finishes in his next two events, McIlroy did show signs of getting back to his best with a strong finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, finishing one stroke behind winner Kurt Kitayama, and McIlroy feels it will help him coming into this week.
"Last week was definitely a positive, a step in the right direction," said McIlroy. "Especially considering the finishes in Phoenix and L.A. so, yeah, as much as I was disappointed that I didn't play the final five holes the way I wanted to, it was still a good week, and I feel like getting into contention last week and sort of having those feelings sets me up well for this week."
One of McIlroy's biggest rivals this week will come in the shape of world number one Jon Rahm, who McIlroy claimed six years ago would go on to be one of the best golfers of his generation, a prophecy McIlroy now feels the Spaniard is fulfilling.
"I think we all knew that even when Jon Rahm was in college you could have made the argument that he was a top-20 player in the world," said McIlroy.
"All the stats suggested that. What he's done in the game up until this point - he had the talent to do that, but it was just more of the using that passion that he has and making that fuel his performance instead of taking it away.
"He's obviously learned how to do that. He's an amazingly talented golfer. Last week wasn't a great week for him after the great start, but he's been relentless. He's been relentless since that first win of his at Torrey Pines.
"He's just, year after year he wins; he's always up there; he's so consistent. His top-10 percentage rate is off the charts. He's going to be one of the best players of his generation."
