Romania v Netherlands Prediction, Tips and Odds: Depay ready to sting Romania

The Netherlands had a mixed bag of results during the group stage, but they have scope to improve and can register a high-scoring victory over Romania, who are preparing for only their second knockout match at the European Championship.

Scraping through as one of the best third-placed teams would not have been part of the Dutch master plan, but they have landed in the softer half of the draw and will be hoping to make further progress, starting with their round of 16 clash against Romania.

Ronald Koeman’s side amassed only four points but so did Romania, who finished top of the tightest section, Group E.

Romania have reached the knockout rounds for only the second time and will be looking to get back to the standards set when they opened up with a superb 3-0 success over Ukraine.

Netherlands have far greater experience of knockout matches and are 21/50 favourites for the victory within normal time and 1/5 to progress. Romania are 7/1 shots to win without needing extra-time and 7/2 to reach the quarter-finals.

Netherlands and over 2.5 goals - 11/8

The Netherlands were on the losing side of an entertaining contest when succumbing 3-2 to Austria last Tuesday, but they can bounce back with a high-scoring victory over Romania at the Allianz Arena.

Looking at the Dutch squad it will be easy to assume that their strength lies in the defensive third.

Ronald Koeman’s centre-back options include Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Micky van de Ven, Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt and there were signs of the Dutch powers of resistance when they held France to a 0-0 draw in the second group stage fixture.

However, the Oranje conceded six goals to France during Euro 2024 qualifying and their vulnerabilities resurfaced again against Austria when they struggled to cope with Ralf Rangnick’s side's high press.

The positive aspect of the Austria game was how vibrant the Dutch were in an attacking sense.

The Netherlands won the shot count 11 to nine and their star striker, Memphis Depay came to the party with an extremely well-taken goal.

Koeman’s challenge is to keep his team on the front foot and cut out the defensive errors.

And he should be able to square that circle against Romania, who have gone backwards since winning 3-0 against Ukraine in their opening game.

They lost 2-0 to Belgium and drew 1-1 with Slovakia although both were open, entertaining matches.

Edward Iordanescu’s side have been exciting to watch, but they conceded a lot of chances in their last two games and may struggle to keep a lid on the attack-minded Dutch.

Memphis Depay to score any time - 6/4

Depay is not spoken about as one of the greats of Dutch football, but he is the nation’s second top scorer with 46 goals - only four fewer than Robin van Persie - and can add at least one more in the Bavarian capital.

All strikers thrive on confidence and Depay should be feeling good about himself after his clinical finish in the 3-2 loss to Austria.

He has the pace and movement to cause problems for Romania and looks a solid 6/4 shot to get on the scoresheet.

Marius Marin to be carded - 7/5

Romania will do their utmost to prevent the Netherlands from building up a head of steam and a lot of their destructive work could be carried out by Pisa holding midfielder Marius Marin.

The 25-year-old received 13 yellow cards and one red in Serie B matches last season and he looks a probable card recipient in Munich.
