Roger Federer to play last ever tennis match with Rafael Nadal in Laver Cup doubles

Tennis legend Roger Federer will bow out of the sport on Friday night as he teams up with long-time rival Rafael Nadal in the Laver Cup.

20-time Grand Slam winner Federer, 41, will represent Team Europe alongside Spaniard Nadal, in a doubles match against Americans Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe who are representing Team World.

The fairy-tale finish to a remarkable career will take place at the O2 Arena in London at 20:30 on Friday evening, with the Swiss 4/7 to retire from tennis with a victory over the Team World pair who are slight underdogs at 11/8.

Competing in his 1,750th and final ATP match, Federer will be cheered on by a capacity crowd with ticket prices to see the veteran’s final game selling out fast and soaring in price since he announced his retirement last week.

Some of the best players in the world of tennis will play at the tournament with Federer’s other long-time rivals Novak Djokovic and Britain’s Andy Murray lining up alongside him as part of Team Europe.

The former world number one is considered by many to be the greatest tennis player of all-time and it is only fitting that, after a career spent competing fiercely with long-time rival Nadal, the pair will team up to see out one of the greatest rivalries in sporting history.

The Greatest Sporting Rivalries: Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal

After struggling with injuries for the past few years Federer decided he was unable to compete in the Laver Cup singles and opted to end his career playing doubles instead. His last competitive singles match came in 2021 when he reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

Once his farewell game is completed he will be replaced in the tournament by Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Elsewhere in the tournament Murray will face Australian Alex de Minaur in the singles format, where the Scotsman is a 11/8outsider, following on from the match between Greek star Stefano Tsitsipas against Argentine Diego Schwartzman this afternoon.

Team Europe will be captained by former world number one and 11-time Grand Slam champion Bjorn Borg, with fierce rival and fellow tennis legend John McEnroe leading Team World.

The Laver Cup has been contested since 2017 and is dubbed the ‘Ryder Cup of the tennis world’ with Team Europe taking on Team World, and is an officially-sanctioned ATP Tour event played on indoor hard courts.

Federer himself was instrumental in the creation of the tournament which is named after Australian tennis legend Rod Laver.
