We profile the 2018 World Darts Champion, 'Voltage' Rob Cross.
Rob Cross is a four time ranking event winner, with the 2018 World Darts Championship undoubtedly being his biggest triumph to date.
It was an incredible victory for Voltage, who was making his debut in the event and he went on to lift the biggest prize in darts having never previously played a World Championship match on the Alexandra Palace stage.
Cross' success that year established him as the one and only player to win the PDC World Darts Championship at the first attempt - barring players who have played in the BDO World Championship.
His other ranking titles have come at the 2019 World Matchplay, one of the sport’s Grand Slam events, where he saw off Michael Smith in the final, before adding the first of two European Championship's to his toll of honour with an 11-6 victory over Gerwyn Price later that year.
He then went on to capture the title for a second time two years later - in 2021 - courtesy of a superb 11-8 triumph over Michael van Gerwen.
He has since reached three more ranking finals (the 2022 Players Championship Finals, 2023 Masters and 2023 Grand Slam of Darts) but came up short in each.
Aside from his World Darts Championship triumph and three other major ranking titles, Rob Cross boasts plenty of other achievements on his record.
'Voltage' won the 2016 PDC Challenge Tour Order of Merit, where he also hit a nine-dart finish during his time on the second-tier tour.
He managed to break into the top-20 in his first year on the Pro Tour and lifted the World Darts Championship title on his debut appearance at Alexandra Palace.
Remarkably, Cross went from an electrician to world champion in only 18 months.
He joined Dennis Priestley, John Part, Raymond van Barneveld and Gary Anderson, as the only players to have beaten the legendary Phil Taylor in a final of the PDC World Darts Championship.
Cross has been a prolific winner on the Pro Tour too, winning eight Players Championship events since 2017, and he has also prevailed in four World Series of Darts events including the 2024 US Darts Masters.
Rob Cross is currently ranked number five on the PDC Order of Merit, having collected £571,750 in ranking points over the course of the past two years.
It has been a remarkable rise for a player that was competing as an amateur, as a Riley's qualifier, just eight years ago.
Rob Cross' nickname, 'Voltage' stems from his former profession as an electrician.
Rob Cross' currently walks out to 'I Don't Wanna Wait' by David Guetta & OneRepublic, after opting to freshen up his tune in 2024.
'Voltage' was previously synonymous with Arrow's 'Hot, Hot, Hot', although that was a song chosen for him by the PDC and one of his sponsors, Target Darts.
Rob Cross is 34-years-old, and will turn 35 on 21st September, 2025.
Rob Cross was born in Pembury, Kent and spent much of his early life growing up in nearby Edenbridge.
He now resides in Hastings on the south-east coast.
Rob Cross has collected £571,750 in prize money over a two-year period in ranking tournaments, with £100,000 of that being earned during his run to the semi-finals of the 2024 World Darts Championship.
He was not involved in the lucrative invitational Premier League event this season, but the 33-year-old picked up £30,000 alone for reaching the final of the Masters.
The former electrician pocketed £400,000 when winning the 2018 World Darts Championship, although given that event was well over two years ago, it does not count towards his current tally.
Target manufactures the darts used by Rob Cross, who throws a 21g, 90 per cent tungsten, 48mm slim barrel Generation 2 dart.
Rob Cross has a current net worth estimated to be around the £1.5m mark, with sponsorship and prize money included within that.
