Republic of Ireland squad for opening Euros qualifier named: Evan Ferguson emergence offers new hope

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has announced his squad as his charges prepare for an international friendly against Lativa before getting their Euros qualification campaign underway against big-hitters France.

Republic of Ireland's latest squad has a youthful feel to it, with in-form 18-year-old Brighton striker Evan Ferguson headlining a number of emerging young stars who will aim to inspire the nation to success after a difficult period for the national team.

Currently 48th in the FIFA World Rankings, the Republic of Ireland have failed to qualify for a major tournament since Martin O'Neill's side memorably reached the last 16 of the Euros in 2016 after dramatically overcoming Italy 1-0 in their final group stage match.

Since then it's been a prolonged spell of struggles for 'The Boys in Green', but the latest contingent undoubtedly contains potential as the national team attempt to turn the corner under manager Stephen Kenny.

23-year-old Mikey Johnston has declared his allegiance after representing Scotland at youth level, with the winger currently plying his trade on loan at Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes from Scottish champions Celtic.

Stoke City loanee Will Smallbone is another uncapped player to be included in the squad after some impressive displays in the Championship since the turn of the year, with promising Norwich City duo Andrew Omobamidele and Adam Idah also recalled after an extended spell on the sidelines through injury.

Despite growing optimism surrounding this fresh-looking squad, the Republic of Ireland face an uphill struggle to qualify for next summer's Euros in Germany having been handed a harsh draw alongside France, Netherlands, Greece and Gibraltar in Group B.
