Reports linking Liverpool CEO Michael Edwards to Al Hilal are 'wide of the mark'

Reports that have suggested Liverpool chief executive of football Michael Edwards has agreed to join Al Hilal are regarded 'wide of the mark'.

Premier League 2025/26

Reports had claimed that the Saudi Pro League aren’t just looking to strengthen on the field, but off it too, with Al Hilal allegedly looking to add Liverpool chief executive of football Michael Edwards to their ranks.

Respected journalist Ben Jacobs took to ‘X’ to suppress the rumours, stating that reports that Edwards has agreed to join Al Hilal are far from the truth.

“Al-Hilal made outreach a few weeks ago, having held a strong interest in Edwards at the time, but there was no formal meeting or offer. Instead, Edwards rebuffed the approach.”

While trading Merseyside for Saudi Arabia seems unlikely for Michael Edwards, it could be on the cards for Liverpool centre forward Darwin Nunez, as referenced by Ben Jacobs.

"The only recent contact Edwards has had with Al-Hilal has been due to their interest in Darwin Nunez."

While the higher-ups at a football club are often unmentioned, Edwards’ return as chief executive of football was a major talking point for Liverpool fans.

In his first spell at the Reds, Edwards worked as a sporting director, and is rightly credited for a number of smart deals in the market.

Reports had suggested that Edwards and former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had a strong, but at times tempestuous relationship, with Edwards leaving the club in 2022.

Some see it as no coincidence that shortly after Klopp’s departure, Edwards was rehired by the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, in 2024 as their chief executive of football, overseeing all football operations at the club.

He is believed to still have a notable contribution to incomings and outgoings, but Jacobs reported FSG’s primary objective going forward with Edwards.

He added: “FSG ownership, including principal owner John Henry, remain committed to buying a second club and have been presented with several viable options to explore. Edwards is playing a leading role in this.”
