Reading FC have agreed terms with a prospective buyer after the EFL granted an extension to their takeover deadline.
Initially the club had until earlier in the month to get a deal done but were granted a reprieve that took them up to April 22nd.
The Royals now have until May 5th, two days after their final day encounter with Barnsley, to complete the deal.
A club statement yesterday confirmed that "further progress has been made towards the sale of the club" and that as a result the English Football League agreed to a second deadline extension.
This breakthrough signifies the furthest point any party has been since the club was almost purchased by ex-Wycombe Wanderers chief Rob Couhig in August.
An official club statement read: "Reading Football Club can confirm further progress has been made towards the sale of the club, with the transaction including the Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Facility.
"As a result, the EFL has agreed for a further extension until May 5th for the transaction to be completed.
"The terms of the deal have been agreed between the club's current owner Mr Dai and the buyer, whose identity must remain confidential at this stage. Both parties will now work to complete the necessary steps to complete the takeover."
Heading into the final two games on the club still have plenty to play for in League One.
Despite off-the-field uncertainty, Reading find themselves outside the play-offs on goal difference alone.
Since the turn of the year only four teams have picked up more points than Noel Hunt's side making Championship football a real possibility for 2025/26.
Before their aforementioned final day clash with Barnsley, the Royals travel to relegation-threatened Bristol Rovers at 12:30 on Saturday afternoon.
Reading are 5/6 to finish in the top six and 28/1 to win promotion to the second tier.
