Aussie Rules: Ratten salutes Ryder after Saints win

St Kilda coach Brett Ratten saluted the performance of Paddy Ryder as he helped his side to a 10-point win over Geelong on Saturday.

St Kilda’s impressive start to the season continued with the win and they now sit in the top four after winning six of the opening nine games.

Ryder stands out

Ryder was hugely influential playing in the ruck and not only that he chipped in with a couple of crucial goals towards the end of the game as the Cats threatened to edge in front.

He finished with three goals in total but his all-round play was praised by Ratten after the game.

"Ryder's influence was enormous," Ratten told reporters. "I did say to him post-game can (his dad) come every week because that was brilliant.

"He's played some patches this year but the performance today was outstanding. We know what he can do with hitouts and giving our players first access to the ball, so it was really good."

Cats missed opportunities

Meanwhile a disappointed Geelong coach Chris Scott was left to missed opportunities and a poor spell in the third quarter that handed St Kilda the ascendancy.

"It's a shame because we probably had control of the game if you take out that 20-minute patch,” Scott said.

"We certainly had our chances but we just aren't good enough at the moment that when we have control of games we take it completely away from the opposition."
