Rangers confirm departure of Barry Ferguson

Rangers have confirmed interim manager Barry Ferguson has left the club following the culmination of the 2024/25 season.

Formerly Rangers captain as a player, Ferguson took the reins at Ibrox on an interim basis in February following the sacking of previous manager Philippe Clement.

47-year-old Ferguson, along with his backroom staff including Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor, will now step aside as Rangers seek to appoint a new manager ahead of next season.

Ferguson presided over 14 matches in all competitions as interim Rangers manager, winning six, drawing four and losing four.

The ex-Scotland midfielder's most memorable moments saw him steer Rangers past Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce in the last 16 of the Europa League and overcome Old Firm rivals 3-2 at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership.

As part of a club statement following his exit, Ferguson said:

I've already lived the dream as a player and as captain of Rangers, and to do so as head coach in these last three months has been an enormous honour.

"There have been some ups and downs, but I have loved this experience and given it my all throughout. The backing I have received has been phenomenal.

"I said, no matter how this period panned out, I would always remain a committed supporter of the club, and I look forward to remaining a Rangers ambassador.

"I wish whomever becomes the new manager every success in the job."

Rangers are expected to be led by a new ownership group including Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group next season who will quickly be tasked with appointing a new manager.

The identity of the club's next manager remains up in the air, with former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin having all been linked with the position.

The remit of the new Rangers manager will be focused on cutting the gap to rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, with Brendan Rodgers' Hoops finishing 17 points ahead of the Gers as they stormed to their fourth consecutive title in 2024/25.

Regarding the club's pursuit of a new manager, Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart said in the official statement after Ferguson's departure: “The search for our new head coach is progressing well, and we look forward to concluding our process in the coming period.”
