NRL: Rabbitohs out to silence the doubters

South Sydney hooker Damien Cook says the Rabbitohs are aiming for the top four and will look to silence the doubters who think they will not be able to cope without Wayne Bennett.

The Rabbitohs made the grand final in 2021 before losing to the Penrith Panthers and are priced at 17/2 to bounce back and win the 2022 premiership.

Big changes

Since the end of last season there have been some big changes with super coach Bennett moving on, while influential captain Adam Reynolds has also joined the Broncos.

Some have suggested that Souths could struggle to reach last year's heights under the leadership of new coach Jason Demetriou, but Cook does not agree.

Bennett calling for patience

Souths have recovered from losing big names in the past and Cook says there is no reason why they cannot do the same this year.

"That's been the comments for the past few years when we lost Greg, then we lost Sam and we lost Sutto and Reyno," Cook said on Tuesday. "It's just like every club, we've got some great players here that just have to move on or retire.

"The good sign for the club is that for the past few years we have managed to get it done the next year as well and step up with the next man up and it shows that we've got some great juniors coming through."

Top-four goal

Meanwhile Cook says they are desperate to have another crack at winning the premiership so finishing in the top-four is the first goal.

"Has been for a long time. Obviously coming off a grand-final loss, we understand what it takes to get there. We just need another shot at the title," he added.
