Finishing second in a Premier League campaign is often heartbreaking enough, let alone recording a second place finish in three consecutive seasons.
While it's hard to believe that a side can some so close on three successive occasions without lifting the title in May, it's an unwanted record that only one Premier League side hold, and it's becoming increasingly likely that they will to do it for a second time when the 2024/25 campaign comes to an end.
We take a look at the Premier League teams to have finished second in three consecutive Premier League seasons.
Year | Winner (Points) | Runner-up (Points) |
1998/99 | Manchester United (79) | Arsenal (78) |
1999/2000 | Manchester United (91) | Arsenal (73) |
2000/2001 | Manchester United (80) | Arsenal (70) |
The closing years of the 20th century will be memorable for all Arsenal fans over a certain age, but not for the right reasons.
A 1998/99 Premier League campaign saw Arsenal come within one point of Manchester United, a team they would get to know quite well over the coming seasons.
While Arsenal had claimed four of their six possible points against their fellow title contenders, a 1-0 loss against Leeds in Gameweek 37 meant they would fall short.
The top two in the Premier League standings would remain the same for the following two terms, though Arsenal wouldn't get quite as close. An 18-point gap existed between the two sides in the 1999/2000 season, while the Red Devils would clinch the title by 10 points in 2000/2001.
While Man Utd would become the first team to win the Premier League in three successive seasons, Arsenal became the first club to finish as runners-up in three straight seasons.
