If the ignominy of suffering relegation from the Premier League wasn't bad enough, several teams have gone down from the top-flight with a whimper.
With Southampton desperately looking to avoid the tag of being the Premier League's worst-ever team, we've taken a look at the sides who have achieved the fewest points in a season.
Team (season) | Points |
Derby County (07/08) | 11 |
Sunderland (05/06) | 15 |
Sheffield United (23/24) | 16 |
Huddersfield Town (18/19) | 16 |
Aston Villa (15/16) | 17 |
Sunderland (02/03) | 19 |
Portsmouth (09/10) | 19* |

Registering one win and scoring 20 goals, the infamous Derby County side of 2007/08 are renowned for being the worst team in Premier League history as they amassed just 11 points in a torrid campaign.
Promoted via the play-offs in the previous season, many envisaged Derby would struggle, although very few anticipated them to capsize in the manner that they did.
Accumulating six points from their opening 10 matches, it wasn't a fantastic start by any stretch of the imagination but there were some minor encouragement for Rams supporters. Then manager Billy Davies left, Paul Jewell inherited the managerial hotseat and Derby's season got drastically worse...
Shipping six in matches to Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Arsenal, Derby finished the campaign on a 32-match winless run, with Jewell accruing just five points from his 24 games in charge.
Their tally of 29 defeats matched that of Sunderland in 2005/06, although you would imagine the Black Cats were relieved to relinquish their title as the worst Premier League team after just two seasons.
Sunderland also plummeted out of the Premier League in 2002/03 with 19 points off the back of 15 consecutive defeats and I doubt the Wearside faithful could have imagined a worse campaign.
But so it proved, with Mick McCarthy's men losing nine successive matches between October and Christmas to leave them rooted to the bottom of the table. By the end of the season, Sunderland only chalked up three wins.
Other teams have flirted with Derby's record low total. Sheffield United shipped the most goals in a Premier League season in 2023/24 as their goals conceded column breached the century mark, while Huddersfield Town and Aston Villa endured miserable campaigns in 2018/19 and 2015/16 respectively.
