Premier League Odds: Cole Palmer 50/1, Erling Haaland 11/2 to break Alan Shearer hat-trick record

Cole Palmer bagged his first hat-trick of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign against Brighton last weekend, and we've priced him up at 50/1 to break Alan Shearer's record of five in a single season.

Manchester City's Erling Haaland has also been priced up at 11/2 in the same market, having blasted four in his maiden Premier League season, with two to his name already this term.

We're only a few weeks into the 2024/25 Premier League and Palmer and Haaland have as many hat-tricks between them as were scored in the entirety of the 2006/07 season, and there's surely more to come.

In the first 38-game Premier League season, Shearer scored three against each of Coventry, Nottingham Forest, West Ham, Bolton and Tottenham to set the record for the most hat-tricks in a Premier League campaign, one that still stands to this day.

Sergio Aguero, who leads the Premier League with 12 hat-tricks, bagged three in successive seasons, while Harry Kane managed four in the 2016/17 campaign, a feat matched by Erling Haaland in his debut season.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Incredibly, Palmer's haul last weekend wasn’t the first time he’d scored four in a Premier League game for Chelsea despite only being at Stamford Bridge for just over a season and it’s hard to pinpoint where the ceiling is for this exciting talent.”

This kind of form hasn’t gone unnoticed by bet365 customers with the 22-year-old shortening considerably in a number of markets.

“Nobody has more direct goal involvements than Palmer since the start of last season with a whopping 43 to his name and as well as being backed from 16/1 into 4/1 for the Top Goalscorer Without Haaland market, and he’s 14/1 into 5/1 to finish with the most assists.

“Such is his all-round game that it would be no surprise to see him land the 2024/25 PFA Player of the Year Award (20/1 into 9/2) after being crowned the Young Player last season."

Any suggestion last year was a fluke has been brushed aside; despite playing in a hugely malfunctioning Chelsea line-up, Palmer was sensational, and playing for a more organised outfit under Enzo Maresca will surely benefit the Manchester City graduate.

Palmer scored his first hat-trick in the dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester United last term, following that up less than a fortnight later with four against Everton.

Palmer's underlying numbers stand up to scrutiny, too. The Chelsea man scored 13 non-penalty goals last season from a npxG of 11.1, with his 11 assists coming from 11.1 xA.

Critics may point out that many of Palmer's goals were penalties last season, but with Chelsea looking a more potent attacking unit this time around, there's every chance of more opportunities from the spot.

As for Haaland, there's little to be said about the Norwegian that hasn't yet been covered. Even in what was considered something of an off season - where he failed to score a goal per game for the first time since leaving Molde as a teenager - Haaland still plundered 27 goals in 31 games.

As long as he stays fit - which he's largely done since his move to the Etihad - goals and records will follow.

There are only three players on more Premier League hat-tricks than Haaland - Robbie Fowler (9), Shearer (11) and Aguero (12) - and there's every chance Haaland tops the list by the end of the season.
