Harry Kane’s brace against Everton saw him overtake Thierry Henry and put him one goal behind Frank Lampard in the Premier League all-time scoring charts and bet365 are 6/5 he tops Alan Shearer’s record of 260 goals.
With 176, Kane looks long odds-on to leapfrog the likes of Lampard (177) Aguero (184), Cole (187) and even Rooney (208), but there will be a debate about whether he can surpass Shearer’s mammoth total.
Admittedly, he won’t be facing defences like Everton’s every week, but there would almost certainly be an increase in the ‘yes’ camp if he were to join Manchester City this summer and likewise a few more doubters if he stays another year at Spurs with him nearing 30.
Either way, Kane gets a perfect opportunity to further eat into the record tally this weekend against Manchester United if last Sunday’s showing at the Etihad is anything to go by.
Far from a flat-track bully, Kane built a reputation for himself for coming good in London derbies. He’s scored league goals 11 against both West Ham and Arsenal and eight against Crystal Palace, but he’ll be keen to improve his record in Manchester, where he’s scored just three goals at Old Trafford, with two of them coming in last season’s 6-1 demolition job.
Just a few weeks ago Kane was looking like falling short of reaching double figures for the first time since breaking into the Spurs side back in 2014. The 28-year-old was as short as 4/11 to score 15 or fewer goals back in January – that’s been pushed out to 2/1, while 16-18 goals has been cut from 11/4 to 15/8.
Kane is one of only four players to score 20+ Premier League goals in five seasons, and while the wait will likely go on for him to make it six, it’s turning into a respectable campaign for the England forward.
Having failed to score in his first six appearances this season, then scoring just one in 13, Kane has started finding the back of the net with the regularity we’ve come to expect, with nine in his last 12. In fact, since 19th December, Kane is the league’s top scorer, and any suggestions that Kane’s best days are behind him have been quickly put to bed.
More promisingly for Kane is his xG figures. In every season since they’ve been recorded, Kane has outperformed his xG, as you might expect for a finisher of his calibre. This season, however, he’s currently 2.2 goals behind what is expected, and if Tottenham can find some consistency in the run-in, Kane may well surpass the 15-goal barrier for the eighth straight season.
His double against the Toffees took him to 10 for the campaign and bet365 rate him as a 25/1 shot to score 25 or more this season for the fourth time in his career.
