NRL: Ponga focused on Knights

Newcastle ace Kalyn Ponga says his focus remains on the Knights despite all the speculation linking him with a move to the Dolphins for the start of 2023.

The Knights have hopes of finishing in the top eight this season but suffered a setback when they slipped to a 30-6 defeat against the Manly Sea Eagles on Thursday night.

Ponga future doubts

Ponga captained the side just a week after he met with Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett to discuss a potential move to Redcliffe next season.

It did not affect his performance as he chipped in with a try during the loss and he insists Newcastle will remain his focus.

Ponga has an option to stay with the Knights for 2023 and 2024 but has yet to make a decision over whether he will sign it.

"I don't know if you notice, but every time you ask me I don't give you an answer. So stay patient, I've got people working on it. My focus is always here," the 24 year-old told reporters after the game.

"It (the Bennett lunch) obviously happened but once it happened, I moved on and worried about the game. It was disappointing the effort we put in at the end because we'd almost got ourselves back in a position to win,"

O’Brien cool

Meanwhile Knights coach Adam O’Brien is cool about the situation and says Ponga will make a decision when the time is right.

"I want him to make the best decision with all the information on the table, then there's no regrets. If he chooses to stay then he's made the choice with all the facts,” The Knights coach said. "I'm really comfortable with all of that and so are his teammates."
