Australian Racing - Racing: Pinarello heading to Queensland

A trip across the Tasman and a tilt at next month's Queensland Derby is on the agenda for Pinarello after a convincing victory at Pukekohe.

He defeated Titled by two and a half lengths with Lingjun Xiongfeng another two and a quarter lengths away in third in Saturday's Group 2 Championship Stakes and he's 8/1 for the Eagle Farm Classic, which takes place over 2400 metres on 28 May.

James full of confidence

"That was a very good run and although we were confident, he hadn't raced since the Derby in early March," Roger James, who trains the winner in partnership with Robert Wellwood, said after the race.

"Leith (Innes) rode him nicely and he travelled very well in the run and you saw his class when he extended away like he did."

Recvovery key for Brisbane trip

James will now monitor the recovery powers of Pinarello with an eye on a trip to Brisbane next month for the three-time winner.

"As long as he pulls up well, then he will be in serious consideration for a trip to Brisbane for the Queensland Derby," James said.

"The race today will have brought his fitness on again and we would look at a race like the Rough Habit Plate as a possible lead-up to a Derby start."

The Group 3 Rough Habit Plate, run over 2000 metres, takes place at Doomben a fortnight before the Queensland Derby.
